Asymmetric Power in Naval Warfare: PİRANA Kamikaze Unmanned Marine Vehicle Ready for Duty

The Turkish defence industry is deploying a new striking force that will change the balance in the defence of the Blue Homeland. The PİRANA Kamikaze Unmanned Marine Vehicle (KİDA), developed by the Machinery and Chemical Industry (MKE), has successfully completed challenging surface navigation and target impact tests. The vehicle, which precisely struck and destroyed a target as small as 3.5 metres in size, is now ready for operational duty.

The doctrine of naval warfare has undergone a radical transformation in recent years. Multi-billion dollar warships are now under threat from small, low-radar-signature, extremely fast, and autonomously operating unmanned marine vehicles. MKE engineers closely analysed this global strategic shift and brought the PİRANA project to life. Produced with the vision of delivering high destructive effect at low cost, this semi-autonomous marine vehicle provides the Turkish navy with a unique infiltration and assault capability against hostile elements.

Precision Hit on a 3.5-Metre Target

Striking small targets while moving at high speed at sea requires superior autonomy software and navigation capability. MKE engineers equipped PİRANA with anti-jamming CRPA-supported GNSS navigation systems and advanced electro-optical cameras. Additionally, the mission computer processes this complex data in real-time.

As a result, in the latest test firing, the vehicle located and destroyed a very small 3.5-metre target with zero error. This exceptional precision proves that it can directly and deliberately target not only the massive hulls of enemy ships but also critical vulnerabilities such as the steering system.

Dual-Stage Armour-Piercing Power: 65 Kilogram Warhead

The greatest strategic difference distinguishing PİRANA from its global competitors comes from MKE's deep-rooted experience in munitions production. The kamikaze UMV carries a specialised warhead weighing a total of 65 kilograms. This warhead consists of a 15-kilogram precursor penetrator and a 50-kilogram high-explosive main body.

This system, known in military terminology as a tandem warhead, first penetrates the thick steel armour of an enemy warship upon impact. Immediately after, the main explosive enters the ship through this opening, creating a massive detonation. Thus, the vehicle inflicts lethal damage on warships hundreds of times its own size or on fortified port facilities.

High Speed, Swarm Intelligence, and Stealth

At its heart, the vehicle houses a powerful diesel engine with a waterjet propulsion system. Thanks to this engine, PİRANA achieves a cruising speed exceeding 50 knots (approximately 92 km/h). Moreover, with a displacement of 1,200 kilograms, the vehicle can operate even in stormy and challenging wave conditions such as Sea State 4.

Furthermore, the platform offers an operational range exceeding 200 nautical miles (approximately 370 km). The vehicle features a composite hull that minimises its radar signature. This composite structure allows the vehicle to conduct infiltration operations in silent mode without being detected by enemy radars. The platform can also be controlled not only from coastal stations but also via aerial vehicles and satellite links.

Swarm Doctrine at Sea

While highly dangerous on its own, PİRANA will completely change the course of naval warfare in the future with the concept of swarm UMV operations. Dozens of PİRANAs attacking an enemy fleet or port simultaneously in autonomous mode would quickly saturate and overwhelm the enemy's point air defence systems.

In conclusion, with this low-cost, high-impact autonomous system, MKE provides Türkiye with a massive force multiplier at sea. In the coming period, these vehicles entering mass production and inventory will elevate the asymmetric striking power of the Turkish navy to an unparalleled level.
