Bayraktar KIZILELMA Breaks the Sound Barrier: “Mach 0.8” Threshold Exceeded in Critical Speed Test

KIZILELMA approached the speed of sound with Mach 0.8. The test images published by Baykar confirmed the speed performance of the unmanned combat aircraft.

Türkiye's first unmanned combat aircraft, Bayraktar KIZILELMA, continues to expand its dominance in the skies. Recent performance test footage shared by Baykar confirms that KIZILELMA has reached a cruising speed of 0.8 Mach. This data proves that the unmanned combat aircraft is one step closer to the speed of sound (Mach 1) and has reached a speed capable of performing formation flight with highly maneuverable manned jets.

Bayraktar KIZILELMA (MİUS), one of the most ambitious projects of the Turkish defense industry, has passed another important milestone in its development process. In the video shared on Baykar Technology's official accounts and announced with the note "Performance Test Flight," KIZILELMA is seen pushing the boundaries of aerodynamics. 0.8 Mach It was observed to be performing a stable flight at a speed of approximately 950-980 km/h (depending on altitude).

Why is a "0.8 Mach Cruising Speed" So Important?

In aviation, there is a critical difference between "Maximum Speed" and "Cruise Speed." An aircraft's ability to momentarily reach a high speed and its ability to fly at that speed for an extended period while maintaining fuel efficiency are different engineering achievements. (Baykar's post...) “Cruise Speed: 0.8 Mach” The emphasis points to the following technical achievements:

  • Approach to the Transonic Region: 0.8 Mach is just before the "Transonic" (transition to the speed of sound) zone in aerodynamic terms. The fact that KIZILELMA can fly stably at this speed demonstrates that its fuselage design and canard structure perfectly manage airflow at high speeds.
  • Integration with Manned Aircraft: Modern fighter jets (F-16, Eurofighter, etc.) typically travel to operational areas at subsonic speeds. KIZILELMA's ability to reach a cruising speed of 0.8 Mach proves its capacity to fly in formation with these aircraft, in a "Loyal Wingman" concept, without falling behind.
  • Engine Performance: The prototype's engine has been certified to maintain its thermal and structural integrity while propelling the platform to these speeds.

“The Swift and Agile Guardian of the "Heavenly Homeland"

KIZILELMA is not just a UAV; it was designed as a combat aircraft with air-to-air and air-to-ground attack capabilities. Therefore, speed is a vital parameter in terms of survivability and time to reach the target.

Having successfully completed wheel-cutting, system identification, and low-speed tests in previous trials, the platform is now expanding its "Flight Envelope." Its speed of 0.8 Mach indicates that KIZILELMA provides the necessary kinetic energy for evading enemy air defense systems and engaging in dogfights.

Objective: Supersonic Speed and TCG Anadolu

According to the roadmap previously announced by Baykar Chairman Selçuk Bayraktar, KIZILELMA will have different engine variants. Although current tests are progressing at subsonic speeds, KIZILELMA will have an afterburner engine option that will be introduced in the future. Exceeding the speed of sound (Supersonic) It is being targeted.

Furthermore, KIZILELMA, which will be the first in the world to have take-off and landing capabilities from short-runway ships, will serve on platforms such as TCG ANADOLU, becoming a key element of Türkiye's overseas power projection. This latest speed test once again confirmed that KIZILELMA is not just a concept, but a mature fighter ready to take to the field.
