The Turkish defence industry is deploying another new platform that will change the balance in the field for internal security operations. The first deliveries of the TULGA 4x4 armoured SUV, developed entirely with domestic resources by BMC within the scope of the Ballistic Protected Patrol Intervention Vehicle Project, have begun. Engineers completed the vehicle's inspection activities and rigorous tactical capability tests with zero defects. Thus, our security forces gain a unique protective shield against asymmetric threats with this new-generation vehicle featuring a born-armoured architecture.

Engineering and Performance: Technical Analysis of the TULGA 4x4

The TULGA 4x4 stands out as a fully-fledged heavy-armoured tactical platform, far beyond a standard SUV. At its heart lies a 4.5-litre turbo-diesel engine. This engine produces 250 PS of power and a massive 800 Nm of torque in the 1500-1800 rpm band. The company uses a 6-speed Allison 1000SP automatic transmission and a BASE brand 2-speed transfer case to transfer this power to the wheels.

Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a BASE brand fully independent double wishbone and coil spring suspension system. Thus, despite its massive gross vehicle weight of 8.2 tonnes, the vehicle promises a smooth ride over rough terrain. Indeed, the platform climbs a 60% gradient and traverses a 30% side slope without overturning. Reaching a maximum speed of 130 kilometres per hour, this giant SUV successfully conducts long-duration patrol missions with its 600-kilometre range.

Smart Equipment and Electronic Shield

BMC designers protect the vehicle not only with ballistic steel but also with smart electronic systems. The TULGA 4x4 comes standard with a night vision system and a 360-degree camera awareness system for its 5-person crew. Furthermore, the vehicle features a collision warning system, blind spot assist, and a 6.2-inch multimedia screen with navigation.

In a potential ambush, run-flat tyres allow the vehicle to quickly leave the conflict zone. Moreover, the automatic fire suppression system in the engine and personnel compartment, along with fire-resistant exterior paint, directly maximises crew survivability.

What Does "Born-Armoured" Mean?

In the industry, manufacturers typically offer armoured vehicles for military use by retrofitting civilian commercial vehicle chassis. However, these heavy armour plates added later cause the vehicle's engine, suspension, and brakes to wear out quickly. Additionally, the centre of gravity rises, significantly increasing the risk of rollover.

BMC engineers, on the other hand, designed the TULGA 4x4 model to be born-armoured from the very first line on the drawing board. This engineering vision ensures that the armour weight is distributed flawlessly and homogeneously across the chassis. Consequently, the vehicle provides top-level ballistic and underbody (mine/IED) protection without compromising its superior manoeuvrability.

A New Era in Internal Security

The entry of the TULGA 4x4 into the inventory maximises the operational safety of internal security personnel. Special operations units and patrol teams will have high climate control comfort and ballistic protection while operating in challenging climate conditions (between -32°C and +49°C). In the coming period, the company aims to rapidly increase the mass production volume of this domestic SUV model. While Türkiye meets its own security needs with domestic platforms, it also creates strong export potential in the global market for vehicles in this class.
