A New Era in Deep Strike: SOM-J, the Smart Missile for KIZILELMA and KAAN, is Ready

The SOM-J cruise missile, developed by TUBITAK SAGE, accurately hit its target with a live warhead. Discover the features of the missile to be integrated into KIZILELMA and KAAN.

Türkiye's strategic striking power for air-to-ground and surface-to-surface targets, the SOM-J cruise missile, has successfully completed its live warhead test firing. According to the development announced by Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, the national missile developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE hit its target with pinpoint accuracy using a live warhead. The system, which stands out with its low observability and high precision features, is now counting down the days to enter the inventory. Furthermore, this successful test directly accelerates the integration process of the missile with the National Combat Aircraft KAAN and the unmanned fighter jet KIZILELMA.

Armour-Piercing Warhead and Smart Targeting

Destroying enemy defence lines from very safe distances is of great importance in modern air operations. The SOM-J cruise missile was designed precisely to meet this stand-off strike requirement. In the latest test, the system demonstrated the destructive power of its armour-piercing warhead in the field.

The prominent engineering details of the missile are as follows:

  • Imaging Infrared Seeker (IIR):Ā The system locates its target not only by GPS coordinates but also by matching its thermal signature. Thus, it successfully completes its mission even under electronic jamming.
  • Automatic Target Recognition:Ā Thanks to its onboard algorithms, the missile autonomously recognises and engages fixed land installations or moving surface targets.
  • Low Altitude Flight and High Manoeuvrability:Ā After launch, the vehicle flies using terrain-following/sea-skimming techniques. Consequently, the missile penetrates below enemy radar coverage and attacks the target from unexpected angles.

Why Was SOM-J Developed?

TÜBİTAK SAGE initially developed the standard SOM missile family for underwing carriage on F-4 and F-16 aircraft. However, fifth-generation stealth fighter jets must carry their munitions in internal weapons bays rather than under the wings to maintain a low radar signature.

Therefore, Turkish engineers redesigned the existing SOM missile in a more compact aerodynamic architecture with foldable wings to fit into internal bays. This new-generation, more stealthy model was named SOM-J.

Network-Enabled Warfare and Real-Time Control

One of the greatest strategic features distinguishing SOM-J from its global competitors is its post-launch control and network-enabled warfare capability. Standard cruise missiles typically cannot change their course after being launched from an aircraft. However, SOM-J can be redirected to an entirely new target even while in flight, using data from the command centre or other friendly aircraft in the air. Ultimately, this capability provides our military with immense tactical flexibility against real-time changes on the battlefield.

The Sword of Stealth Warriors

The flawless completion of the live warhead test indicates that the missile's qualification process is now nearing its end. As Minister Fatih Kacır noted, all focus is now on integration with KAAN and KIZILELMA.

In the coming period, these two low-observable platforms will take off with SOM-J missiles in their internal bays. Our aircraft, approaching hundreds of kilometres without being detected by enemy radars, will launch their smart missiles that also evade radar detection. Ultimately, Türkiye will achieve a fully independent, unstoppable asymmetric force multiplier in the deep strike concept, where manned and unmanned systems will operate jointly.
