Fresh Blood for the Steel Dome: New SİPER-1 Battery and New Aksungur UAVs Enter Service

The new SIPER-1 battery and Aksungur UAVs entered the TAF inventory. Also, MKE was accepted into IAQG Europe. Discover the detailed technical analysis.

The deterrence of the Turkish Armed Forces in the sky continues to increase with uninterrupted deliveries from the domestic defence industry. According to the latest statement made by the Ministry of National Defence Press and Public Relations Advisor Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk, a new battery of the regional air and missile defence system SİPER-1 has been added to the inventory. Additionally, the acceptance activities for a number of Aksungur UAVs and CATS electro-optical camera systems have been successfully completed. Meanwhile, the Machinery and Chemical Industry (MKE) has been accepted into a strategic membership in the international aviation ecosystem, officially taking its place at the table where global quality standards are set.

A Strategic Step in Layered Air Defence: SİPER-1

The SİPER system, which forms one of the highest umbrellas of the layered air defence network that Türkiye is building under the Steel Dome project, is steadily increasing its numbers in the inventory. The new SİPER-1 battery announced by the Ministry of National Defence plays a vital role in protecting strategic facilities and vast territories from enemy fighter jets, cruise missiles, and air-to-surface munitions.

The mass entry of this system into the inventory on a battery basis demonstrates that Türkiye has gained a full Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) capability over its airspace. With its advanced early warning radars and high-speed interceptor missiles, the system offers the capacity to detect and destroy potential threats hundreds of kilometres away before they approach national borders.

Uninterrupted Observation Power in the Skies: Aksungur and CATS Integration

On the aviation side of the deliveries, TUSAŞ-produced Aksungur UAVs and ASELSAN-signed CATS electro-optical sensor systems stand out. With its twin-engine structure and massive payload capacity of 750 kilograms, Aksungur performs a wide range of missions from maritime patrol to deep strike. These platforms, which can stay airborne for over 50 hours continuously, provide our military with immense operational flexibility in border security.

The CATS (Common Aperture Targeting System) cameras, located on the UAVs and whose inspection acceptances have been completed, consign the covert embargoes imposed by allied countries in the past to history. These domestic sensors, with laser designation and high-resolution day/night vision capabilities, enable Aksungur to accurately guide smart munitions such as MAM-L and MAM-T to their target range.

A Historic Achievement from MKE on the Global Stage

Alongside the system deliveries, MKE, a long-established cornerstone of the Turkish defence industry, has passed a very critical threshold internationally. The company, which continued its weapon and ammunition deliveries to the TAF and allied nations throughout the week, was officially accepted as a member of the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) Europe.

This membership carries strategic significance far beyond a simple certification process. MKE now has a direct say at the table where quality standards (such as AS9100) in the global aviation, space, and defence ecosystem are determined. MKE's inclusion in this group, steered by world giants like Airbus, Boeing, and BAE Systems, clearly proves that the ammunition and sub-systems it produces are certified at the highest level of reliability in the global market.

Rapid Transition from Production to the Field

These recent developments announced by the Ministry of National Defence confirm that the Turkish defence industry has made a flawless transition from research and development (R&D) phases to mass production and field deployment. While the new SİPER-1 battery secures the airspace, the Aksungur and CATS duo maximise operational awareness beyond borders. MKE's seat at the global quality table stands out as the clearest indicator that the developed domestic systems will not remain in the domestic market but will instead transform into a game-changing export power in the global supply chain.
