The Turkish aviation industry is producing a highly critical platform to meet the testing and training needs of national air defence systems. Born from an R&D project initiated by TAI engineers in 2009, the ŞİMŞEK High-Speed Target Drone System accurately mimics enemy fighter jets and cruise missiles in the sky. The system creates a realistic combat environment during live-fire exercises of the Turkish Armed Forces. Thus, Türkiye validates its multi-billion dollar air defence network with a completely domestic test partner.

Developing air defence missiles or air-to-air munitions is only one dimension of the work. To ensure these systems will hit their targets without fail in a combat environment, you must test them against highly agile, fast, and intelligent targets. TAI developed the ŞİMŞEK platform precisely to meet this strategic need. Possessing the flight characteristics of combat aircraft, this system serves as the most challenging and realistic training partner for our national shield in the field.

Engineering that Mimics the Enemy: The Technical Anatomy of ŞİMŞEK

Engineers designed the ŞİMŞEK platform with an open architecture that can be shaped according to customer needs. Manufactured from advanced composite materials, the vehicle stands out with its durability meeting military standards.

The system's aerodynamic and technical features leave nothing to be desired in a real combat scenario:

  • Speed and Altitude: The vehicle easily exceeds the speed limit of 350 knots (approx. 650 km/h) in the air. Additionally, the system operates across a wide spectrum, from very low altitudes of 50 feet up to 25,000 feet.
  • Range and Endurance: The vehicle has an operational range of 120 kilometres and an endurance of 45 minutes. These values offer an ideal timeframe for radar tracking and interception training.
  • Flexible Launch and Recovery: ŞİMŞEK is not only launched from the ground using a catapult. The vehicle can also be launched from the helicopter platforms of navy ships. Furthermore, it can begin its mission by being released in mid-air from the wing of an unmanned aerial vehicle. At the end of the flight, the vehicle lands safely on land or sea thanks to its integrated parachute system.

Smart Payloads that Deceive Sensors

The most important task of a target drone is to appear as a massive threat on radars and thermal cameras. By carrying active and passive radar signature augmenters (Luneberg Lens), ŞİMŞEK increases its radar cross-section (RCS), making itself appear like a fighter jet.

Furthermore, the Infrared Signature Augmenter (Hot Nose) equipment on the vehicle attracts heat-seeking missiles directly towards it. The Onboard Scoring System (SKS) millimetrically measures how close the fired munition came to the target. Thus, military personnel analyse the success of the firing using scientific data.

Why is a Domestic Target Drone Necessary?

In recent years, Türkiye has been rapidly inducting national air defence systems such as HİSAR, SİPER, and KORKUT into its inventory. In the past, foreign-origin target drones were generally used for testing these systems. However, foreign platforms not only incurred high costs but also jeopardised the data confidentiality of the national radars being tested.

Thanks to ŞİMŞEK, Türkiye tests its critical air defence algorithms within a completely secure and closed national ecosystem. The vehicle's original flight control system and autopilot infrastructure record all flight data in real-time and in encrypted form. This ensures that test results never leak out. Additionally, in emergencies, the vehicle returns to a pre-determined point using Return-to-Home mode and performs an automatic landing.

The Path Leading to the Kamikaze Concept

ŞİMŞEK goes far beyond being merely a training tool. The system forms a solid foundation for the deep experience gained by the Turkish defence industry in autonomous flight and target drone technology.

Today, this experience is rapidly evolving into decoy and kamikaze UAV concepts. Indeed, building on the knowledge gained from the ŞİMŞEK platform, TAI is now bringing to life the much faster and more destructive Süper Şimşek project.
