New Power in Deep Strike: STM Conducts Long-Range Kamikaze UAV Test

STM shared the first flight footage of its new Long-Range Kamikaze UAV with the slogan "Distance is no longer an obstacle."

Türk savunma sanayisi, düşman derinliklerindeki stratejik hedefleri yok edecek yepyeni bir asimetrik gücü sahaya sürmeye hazırlanıyor. Taktik vurucu insansız hava araçları (İHA) konusunda dünyanın sayılı şirketlerinden biri olan STM, resmi sosyal medya hesaplarından yayınladığı sürpriz bir videoyla Uzun Menzilli Kamikaze İHA projesinin ilk uçuş görüntülerini kamuoyuyla paylaştı. “Mesafe, artık bir engel değil” sloganıyla duyurulan bu yeni nesil sistem, Türkiye’nin vurucu gücünü cephe hattından çıkarıp yüzlerce kilometre ötedeki düşman karargahlarına ve hava savunma radarlarına taşıyor.

The modern battlefield is undergoing a massive transformation where classic fighter jets or million-dollar cruise missiles are increasingly being replaced by cheaper, smarter, and longer-endurance kamikaze UAVs (loitering munitions). Having been the biggest supporter of infantry on the front line with tactical-level systems such as KARGU, ALPAGU, and BOYGA, STM is now elevating its vision to a strategic dimension. The mysterious flight footage shared by the company with the note "Stay tuned" clearly proves that the long-range strike concept, which was at the laboratory stage, has successfully taken to the skies.

From Tactical Field to Strategic Strike

This new-generation Long-Range Kamikaze UAV developed by STM plays a game-changer role in the asymmetric warfare doctrines of armies. Tactical kamikaze UAVs (e.g., KARGU) are typically used within a 10-15 km range directly by infantry against terrorist targets. However, the Long-Range concept requires entirely different aerodynamic and navigation engineering.

Based on the initial released footage and STM's engineering background, the system is expected to possess the following critical capabilities:

  • Unjammable Navigation: It is impossible for a system flying hundreds of kilometres to find its target using only GPS. Enemy electronic warfare (EW) systems can easily jam GPS signals. The inclusion of visual navigation and terrain-referenced algorithms, used in STM's existing systems, in this new platform will ensure the UAV reaches its target without being blinded even under electronic jamming.
  • Heavy Warhead: Long-range systems are typically used to destroy enemy bunkers, radar bases, and air defence batteries like Patriot or S-400. Therefore, the platform is planned to carry a much heavier and armour-piercing warhead compared to classic tactical UAVs.
  • Low Observability and Cost-Effectiveness: These systems, which fly much slower than cruise missiles but can wait for opportunity targets by loitering longer, have the ability to penetrate under air defence radars thanks to their low radar cross-section (RCS).

Lessons from Wars in Our Region

Why do we need a long-range kamikaze UAV? The answer to this question lies in the Ukraine-Russia war and current conflicts in the Middle East. These wars have shown that long-range kamikaze UAVs (e.g., Shahed-136/Geran-2 type systems) launched from thousands of kilometres away can render even the world's most advanced air defence systems helpless.

While the production cost of these systems ranges between $50,000 and $100,000, a single air defence missile used to intercept them costs $2 to $4 million. When the enemy exhausts its missiles trying to shoot down these cheap UAVs, it becomes completely vulnerable against truly dangerous fighter jets and cruise missiles. With STM's new move, Türkiye is not only catching up with this global asymmetric trend but also making these systems much smarter and more lethal with its own artificial intelligence algorithms.

Impregnable Networks with Swarm Intelligence

STM's Multi-Domain and Heterogeneous Swarm vision, announced in recent months, provides a major clue about the future usage concept of this new UAV. In the coming period, these long-range platforms will not be launched individually but as a swarm together with dozens of UAVs operating at different altitudes. These swarms, communicating with each other in the air, sharing tasks, and rapidly saturating enemy air defence radars with data, will carry Türkiye's deterrent shield to an intercontinental dimension.

Future Vision
