Turkcell announced the first domestically produced smartphone, with design and software entirely developed by Turkish engineers and designers. Turkcell CEO Süreyya Ciliv's statement, "We've pressed the button," at the Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, Spain, dominated the agenda of the Turkish delegation at the Congress. Announced at a press conference also attended by the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Binali Yıldırım, the domestically produced smartphone, codenamed "Gebze," is expected to contribute approximately half a billion Turkish Lira to reducing the current account deficit for every 1 million units sold.
