Turkey's First Quantum Computer QuanT Introduced: A New Era in Technology Begins!

Turkey's first quantum computer "QuanT" was developed by TOBB ETU and introduced to the public.

TOBB ETU - Turkey's first Quantum Computer

Turkey took a historic step in the world of technology today. "QuanT," the country's first quantum computer, was developed by TOBB University of Economics and Technology (TOBB ETÜ) and unveiled to the public.

This development is seen as a major step forward for Türkiye on its path to becoming a significant player in the global technology race.

QuanT is a product of TOBB ETÜ's ongoing work on quantum technologies since 2010. TOBB President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu emphasized that this technology center is unique in the world, bringing together six different engineering disciplines. At this center, researchers are trained, technology is developed, transformed into products, and commercialized.

What is a quantum computer?

Quantum computers, unlike classical computers, perform operations using "quantum bits" (qubits). QuanT, with its initial capacity of 5 qubits, will offer significant advantages in fields such as the defense industry and optimization problems. Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that quantum computers will bring groundbreaking solutions in areas such as health, finance, and cybersecurity.

QuanT's Capacity How does it compare to other quantum computers in the world?

QuanT, with its 5-qubit capacity, offers a significant advantage for solving certain types of problems that classical computers struggle with. For example, solving complex optimization problems or some difficult encryption techniques in cryptography becomes possible with this quantum computer. However, compared to its competitors worldwide, QuanT is still in its early stages. Google's 53-qubit Sycamore processor was able to complete a calculation in 200 seconds that would take a classical supercomputer 10,000 years. IBM, on the other hand, announced in 2023 that it had developed a computer capable of obtaining accurate results for 100+ qubit operations. At this point, QuanT's 5-qubit capacity can be considered entry-level, but it is an important starting point for a nascent technology. Türkiye's investments and developments in this field will enable this capacity to increase over time and rise to a stronger position in international competition.

The Strategic Importance of Quantum Computing

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz stated that QuanT will increase Türkiye's international competitiveness in information technology. This will provide a strategic advantage not only in terms of technological independence but also in the country's economic and defense sectors.

QuanT will offer new opportunities to young researchers and entrepreneurs. With this technology, TOBB ETÜ aims to encourage young people to work in the field of quantum technologies.

Future Goals

The academics involved in the project and TOBB ETÜ plan to develop higher-capacity quantum computers by establishing the necessary infrastructure for superconducting chip production.

Türkiye's development of this quantum computer strengthens the country's technological independence and contributes to the global quantum technology ecosystem. This step is seen as a significant milestone in the future development of domestic algorithms and in Türkiye's path to becoming a leader in this field.
