Roketsan and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control signed a Collaboration Agreement on October 22, 2014, for SOM-J, a new-generation air-to-surface cruise missile for the new-generation aircraft F-35 Lightning II.
The SOM system, originally developed in Türkiye, is defined as an autonomous, long-range, low-observable, all-weather, high-precision air-to-surface cruise missile. The SOM-J variant, on the other hand, is being specifically developed to be carried in the internal weapons station of the F-35 aircraft, within the scope of the project carried out by the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries to meet the needs of the Turkish Air Force.
Within the scope of the Collaboration Agreement signed between Roketsan and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, it is envisaged that joint work will be carried out between the companies to make SOM-J available to the United States and other F-35 user countries, and that the missile will be marketed globally for application to other air platforms.
