Uninterrupted Surveillance in the Eastern Mediterranean: TRNC Radar System Project Launched

The foundation has been laid for the TRNC Coastal Surveillance Radar System (SGRS) project, which will enhance security in the Eastern Mediterranean. Strategic details of the project carried out by HAVELSAN.

A critical project to enhance security in the maritime area of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is being implemented. The foundation laying process for the Coastal Surveillance Radar System (SGRS) Project has officially begun. The Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) is managing the project as the procurement authority. HAVELSAN Technology Radar (HTR) is the main contractor for the project. This major project will serve as a digital shield in the Blue Homeland.

Comprehensive Surface Picture and Effective Radar Coverage

The SGRS Project represents much more than a standard radar antenna. The system fuses radar data with electro-optic sensors and other information sources. Subsequently, the software provides a flawless digital maritime picture to the command centre. The Coast Guard Command is shaping this advanced infrastructure according to its operational needs. This integration creates effective radar coverage in the maritime areas of both countries. Furthermore, thanks to the algorithms developed by domestic engineers, target detection is made fully autonomous.

Shifting Balances and Strategic Positioning in the Eastern Mediterranean

The Eastern Mediterranean lies at the very centre of global energy competition and power struggles. Therefore, intelligence gathered from the TRNC coast is of great importance for Türkiye's national security. Officials are now extending the radar network previously implemented on the Turkish coast to the island of Cyprus. HTR Chairman of the Board Savaş Yanık draws attention to the project's importance for regional security. Yanık states that the system will establish a sustainable surveillance infrastructure in the TRNC maritime area.

Infrastructure Strengthened by Domestic Engineering

Foreign-origin radar systems carry significant data security risks in electronic warfare environments. HTR General Manager Mustafa Özçelik emphasises that the project is progressing with entirely domestic engineering. This developed integrated approach protects our maritime security against hardware or software embargoes.

Future Vision

Furthermore, the TRNC radar system will instantly detect smuggling and violation attempts in the region. Thus, our forces will continuously monitor the eastern flank of the Blue Homeland, both cybernetically and electronically. This infrastructure move clearly proves that Türkiye is a global actor. Our country is now establishing its own network-centric security architecture, even across vast geographies. Our eyes and ears will operate entirely with our own capabilities, even at the farthest points of the Eastern Mediterranean.
