Türkiye's Domestic and National Engines: What Engines Have Been Developed, Produced, and Tested?

Engines produced in Türkiye hold a significant place in the defense industry and aviation sector. Developed and manufactured by Turkish engineers, these domestically produced engines are used in air, land, and sea vehicles also developed nationally by Turkish engineers.

These engines contribute to Türkiye's technological independence while also generating export revenue. Here's what you need to know about the domestically produced engines that form the backbone of the Turkish defense industry, powering land, air, and sea vehicles – engines that are currently in the project phase, testing phase, or have already been delivered.

TEI-PD170

TEI PD170 Aviation Engine

The TEI-PD170, Türkiye's first domestically produced aviation engine, was developed by TUSAŞ Engine Industry Inc. (TEI) as part of a project initiated in 2012. Designed as a turbo-diesel aviation engine, it is intended for use in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as the ANKA and Bayraktar TB3. The TEI-PD170 is a high-performance, low-fuel-consumption engine with 170 horsepower. Outperforming its competitors in terms of altitude capability and fuel consumption, the TEI-PD170 features a two-stage series turbocharger system. Capable of operating with JP-8 or Jet-A1 fuels, the TEI-PD170 engine has a dry weight of 162 kg, significantly ahead of its rivals. Equipped with a Redundant Engine Control System developed and manufactured by TEI, and designed according to civil aviation standards, the TEI-PD170 engine has a ceiling altitude of 45,000 ft. The ANKA platform made its first flight on December 27, 2018. The first batch of this engine was delivered in 2020, and more than 40 units have been produced to date.

TEI-PD180

TEI PD180 Aviation Engine

The TEI-PD180ST engine is the second turbo diesel aviation engine developed by TEI, and it is being developed to meet the power requirements of MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) class unmanned aerial vehicles.

Designed to be lighter and more powerful than the TEI-PD170 engine, this engine surpasses its competitors on the market with features such as a single-stage turbocharger system, high altitude capability, low fuel consumption, and lightweight aluminum block design, taking the capabilities of the platforms in which it is used to a higher class.

TEI-PD200

TEI PD200, Bayraktar TB3 Engine

Developed to meet the high power requirements of MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) class unmanned aerial vehicles during takeoff, the TEI-PD200 Turbodiesel Aviation Engine has a power generation capacity of 197 HP (±2).

The TEI-PD200, which surpasses its competitors in terms of altitude capabilities and fuel consumption, features a two-stage series turbocharger system. The TEI-PD200 engine, which can operate with JP-8, JP-5, or Jet-A1 fuels, is notable for its dry weight of 162 kg. Equipped with a Redundant Engine Control System, manufactured and developed by TEI, and designed according to civil aviation standards, the TEI-PD200 engine has a ceiling altitude of 45,000 ft.

The TEI-PD200 engine is used in the Bayraktar TB3, the world's first unmanned aerial vehicle capable of autonomous landing and takeoff from ships with short runways, such as the TCG Anadolu.

TEI-PD222

TEI PD222 Aviation Engine

TEI-PD222ST is a turbo diesel aviation engine developed by TEI. This engine boasts 222 horsepower, high performance, low fuel consumption, and quiet operation. The TEI-PD222 is designed for use in larger unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as the ANKA-2. The first prototype of this engine was completed in 2021, and testing commenced.

TEI-TS1400

TEI TS1400 Turboshaft Aviation Engine

TEI-TS1400 is a turboshaft helicopter engine developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ). This powerful engine boasts 1400 horsepower and is designed for high performance. It also features low fuel consumption, making it a more economical and environmentally friendly option. The TEI-TS1400 engine is specifically designed for the ATAK and GÖKBEY helicopters. The project was officially launched on March 8, 2017. Testing of the first prototype, completed in 2019, has begun, and tests on the GÖKBEY helicopter are still ongoing. With its robust construction, the TEI-TS1400 offers long-lasting performance and holds a significant place in the Turkish aviation sector. A milestone in the field of helicopter engines, the TEI-TS1400 is intended for successful use in future aviation projects.

TEI-TF6000

TEI TF6000 Turbofan Aviation Engine

TEI-TF6000 is a turbofan jet engine designed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) and developed by TEI (TUSAŞ Engine Industry Inc.). This engine has a thrust of 6,000 lbf and is equipped with features such as high efficiency, low cost, and long service life.

The TEI-TF6000 Turbofan Engine and its derivatives can be used in various national platforms such as manned and unmanned combat aircraft, business jets, regional passenger aircraft, civil and military helicopters with a takeoff weight of 10 tons, patrol boats, and power plants. The first prototype of this engine was completed in 2023, and testing is planned to begin within the same year.

TEI-TF10000

TEI TF10000 Turbofan Aviation Engine

TEI, which provides solutions to Türkiye's turbofan engine needs, is developing the TEI-TF10000 Turbofan Engine, the first original design national turbofan engine with 10,000 lbf (6,000 lbf dry thrust) power including afterburner. This project is critically important both for meeting the country's needs and for gaining technology on the way to the engine of the National Combat Aircraft KAAN. The TEI-TF10000 Turbofan Engine is expected to power many manned and unmanned aviation platforms.

Within the scope of the TEI-TF10000 project, a turbofan engine with afterburner and its related critical technologies will be developed domestically for the first time in Türkiye. It is also planned that the engine accessories and subsystems will be developed by domestic companies. The overall goal of this project is to gain expertise and experienced human resources both within TEI and its subcontractors.

TEI – TF35000 Turbofan Engine

TEI TF35000, KAAN Engine

Turkey has taken a significant step towards developing the TF35000 turbofan engine, with a thrust of 35,000 lbf, which will be at the heart of its 5th generation national fighter aircraft, KAAN. The partnership established with TRMotor under the auspices of the Presidency of Defence Industries has brought to life one of the country's most ambitious projects in the aviation sector.

Equipped with superalloys for high temperature resistance and advanced coating and cooling technologies, the TF35000 is being uniquely designed to meet KAAN's superior performance and durability needs. Low fuel consumption and long range capability are also among the engine's standout features.

The project aims to create an integrated ecosystem to support the design, production, and testing phases. The development of the TF35000 will not only reduce Türkiye's dependence on foreign sources for 5th generation fighter jet engine technology but also increase its competitiveness in the global aviation market.

TR Engine – Turbofan Engine

TR Motor Power Systems Industry Inc. was established in 2017 to carry out design and development activities in the field of turbofan engine technologies in Türkiye. The company serves as the main contractor in turbofan engine design and development projects for next-generation aircraft. TR Motor plans to develop a special engine for Türkiye's 5th generation fighter jet, KAAN, by 2028. This engine is a high-performance engine made of cutting-edge materials that can withstand high temperatures and pressures and has supersonic flight capability without operating an afterburner. More than 200 engineers are working on the development of this engine. The cost of this engine is estimated to be approximately $1 billion. KAAN is expected to make its first flight with this domestically produced engine in 2028.

TEI TJ300

TEI TJ300

Within the scope of the cooperation realized based on the protocol signed between TEI and Roketsan in September 2017 with the support of TÜBİTAK, the TEI-TJ300 OMGS (Medium-Range Anti-Ship) Air-Breathing Jet Engine Project was initiated. The first prototype test of the turbojet engine, which was designed, developed and manufactured entirely domestically, was successfully carried out on February 25, 2020.

Motor boyutlarındaki zorlayıcı kısıtlar, ilgili füze sisteminin kullanım alanını birçok platforma uyacak şekilde genişletmektedir. TEI-TJ300 motoru 5000 ft irtifada ses hızının %90’ına varan yüksek hızlarda çalışabilme özelliğine sahiptir. Herhangi bir başlatıcı sisteme (marş motoru) ihtiyaç olmadan rüzgar etkisi (windmilling) ile başlayabilme özelliği platformun hem hava, hem deniz, hem de kara savunma sistemlere uygulanabilmesini mümkün kılmaktadır.

Furthermore, in April 2021, the TEI-TJ300 engine set a world record in its class by achieving a thrust level of 1,342 Newtons with a small engine bore of 224 mm.

TEI TJ90

The TEI-TJ90 turbojet engine was developed by TEI to meet the gas turbine needs of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Development work on this turbojet engine, which provides higher thrust than the TEI-TJ35 engine, began in January 2011. These engines are controlled entirely through domestically developed electronic control units. The first flight test was conducted on June 5, 2013. On June 7, 2017, the TEI-TJ90 performed its maiden flight aboard TUSAŞ's Şimşek platform.

KALE KTJ-3200

Developed by Kale Arge, the KTJ-3200 Turbojet Engine is known as an engine designed specifically for use in unmanned platforms. This engine incorporates a 4-stage axial compressor, an annular combustion chamber, and a single-stage turbine. With a thrust of 3,200N, this engine is 63cm long, approximately 30cm in diameter, and weighs 50kg.

The KTJ-3200 Turbojet Engine is designed to be integrated into the Atmaca Anti-Ship Missile, developed by ROKETSAN, and the SOM Cruise Missile, developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE, within the scope of the National Turbojet Engine Procurement and Integration Protocol. It is one of the important engines for the Turkish defense industry, obtained in order to reduce Türkiye's dependence on foreign sources.

DeltaV HIS Engine

The DeltaV HIS Engine is a space propulsion system developed by Türkiye for its lunar hard landing mission. The HIS Engine is a hybrid rocket system that uses a mixture of solid and liquid materials as fuel. It is the first hybrid rocket system in the world to be used in orbital operations. The HIS Engine is a more cost-effective and safer option compared to liquid-fueled orbital transfer vehicles. The HIS Engine is being developed in collaboration with the Turkish Space Agency. It will enable the development of more efficient and advanced space propulsion systems in the future.

TTZA (TUNA)

BMC Power TTZA Tuna Engine

TTZA is a 400 horsepower, 8.4-liter, inline four-cylinder diesel engine manufactured by BMC Power. This engine was designed for use in BMC Vuran multi-purpose armored vehicles. TTZA underwent over 6,500 hours of testing at the test center and 140,000 kilometers of vehicle testing, completing NATO durability tests. Serial production of this engine began in 2023, with a total of 90 units delivered. At the ceremony where the name launch took place, the new name of the TTZA engine was announced as TUNA.

AZRA

BMC Power AZRA Engine

The 600 horsepower diesel engine produced by BMC POWER offers a high-performance and reliable option. This engine is generally designed for use in heavy-duty military vehicles. Following its successful first ignition in 2018, testing and calibration work continues on the engine, both on test rigs and in vehicles. Designed and developed from scratch by Turkish engineers within BMC POWER with a strong R&D team, preparations for mass production of this 6-cylinder engine are also underway.

TRIUMPH

BMC Power UTKU engine

The V8 engine, which is the first V-cylinder and the first 8-cylinder engine designed and developed by Turkish engineers, successfully completed its first ignition in 2020. Testing and calibration work continues at the BMC POWER test center. Simultaneously, BMC POWER is also developing projects for a transmission with steering and braking capabilities and high torque, a high-efficiency cooling unit, and a multi-functional control unit, all compatible with the 1000 horsepower engine.

BLUE BATU

BMC Power - Blue Batu Marine Engine

Mavi Batu is a state-of-the-art marine diesel engine project developed by BMC Power, boasting 1407 horsepower. Its 12-cylinder V-type design and 27.36-liter engine displacement combine high torque and durability. Designed with BMC's domestic engineering expertise, Mavi Batu is engineered to deliver maximum performance in harsh marine conditions. Equipped with an advanced fuel injection system, water-cooled turbocharger, and electronic control unit, the engine aims for long lifespan, low fuel consumption, and superior efficiency, making it one of Türkiye's strongest representatives in the marine engine sector.

BATU

BMC Power BATU Engine

The V12 engine, the first 12-cylinder engine designed and developed by Turkish engineers, successfully completed its first ignition in 2021. This engine was designed for the ALTAY TANK. Testing and qualification studies are ongoing at the BMC POWER test center. Simultaneously, BMC POWER is also developing projects for a high-torque transmission with steering and braking capabilities, a high-efficiency cooling unit, and a multi-functional control unit, all compatible with the 1500 horsepower engine.

HVSM-219

ASELSAN HVSM-219 Electric Vehicle Motor

Developed by ASELSAN for electric vehicle applications such as buses and trucks, and other medium and high-power traction systems, the HVMSM-219 electric motor is a 6-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor. It offers high torque and power density and, thanks to its compact structure, is suitable for use in hybrid and electric vehicles. Its high field attenuation allows for operation at high speeds and easy control. This highly efficient motor also has a low noise level during operation due to its low cogging torque.

HVSM-287

ASELSAN HVSM-287 Electric Vehicle Motor

Developed by ASELSAN, the HVMSM-287 electric motor is a 9-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor suitable for electric vehicle applications such as buses and trucks, as well as other medium and high-power traction systems. It offers high torque and power density and, thanks to its compact structure, is suitable for use in hybrid and electric vehicles. Its high field attenuation allows for operation at high speeds and easy control. This highly efficient motor also has a low noise level during operation due to its low cogging torque.

Engine development efforts in Türkiye are not limited to the products mentioned in this article; national engine development projects are ongoing in many areas, either through technology transfer or as original designs, for use in both military and civilian sectors.
