Special Post from TUSAŞ for the 2nd Anniversary of KAAN's First Flight: Differences Between P0 and P1 Become Clear

TUSAŞ shared images of the new prototypes on the 2nd anniversary of KAAN's first flight. In the video, the design differences between P0 and P1 drew attention.

Exactly two years have passed since February 21, 2024, a turning point in Turkish aviation history. On this historic anniversary of the National Combat Aircraft KAAN's first rendezvous with the sky, TUSAŞ shared exciting new images. In the released video, the design differences between the P0 prototype, which conducted the first flight, and the newly produced P1 prototype were seen clearly for the first time. KAAN is shedding its test aircraft identity and assuming its fighter identity.

On the anniversary of that historic day, February 21st, when Turkey's 5th generation fighter jet dream became a reality, TUSAŞ made a meaningful post. The video, shared with the note "The determination, belief, power, and will of a nation met the sky that day," was not merely a celebration but also proof of the technical progress in the project. While the footage showed the current status of KAAN's prototypes, aviation enthusiasts' eyes were drawn to the distinct differences between P0 (Prototype 0) and the new P1 (Prototype 1).

From P0 to P1: Transition from Test to Operational Design

The shared images reveal the engineering evolution of the KAAN project. The P0 prototype, which made the first flight, was used to test flight characteristics. It is estimated that the new prototypes seen in the video are much closer to the final design.

The differences reflected in the images that first caught the attention of experts are as follows:

  • Internal Weapon Bay: The internal weapons system, not clearly visible in the first prototype, is now apparent with the new prototype P1.
  • Modified Nose Design: It is noticeable that the radome structure and sensor housings have been prepared for the integration of AESA radar and IRST systems, and aerodynamic improvements have been made to the nose geometry.
  • Elevon Design: Differences are observed in the design of the elevons, which provide both pitch and roll control to the aircraft.
  • Stabilator Design: Another design change is observed in the aircraft's horizontal tail.
  • Engine Positioning: Another structural detail noted by experts is that the gap between the aircraft's engines appears wider compared to P0.

TUSAŞ's Emphasis on Delivery

The most critical message in TUSAŞ's post concerned the project's phase. The statement included in the announcement, "We continue to work and produce for the delivery of KAAN," confirms that the focus is now not only on test flights but also on preparations for the first delivery to the Air Force and serial production.

In its message, TUSAŞ also demonstrated historic reverence, stating: "The dream of the Nuri Demirağs, the Vecihi Hürkuşs; KAAN, brought to life with the prayers of our nation, is the most powerful declaration of our march towards the future on our own wings."
