Turkey's first mobile satellite Grizu-263A, developed by Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, is being sent into space today.
Ranked second in the world in consecutive model satellite competitions held in the USA in 2018 and 2019, and ranked first in Turkey in the 4th Türksat Model Satellite competition held within the scope of Teknofest 2019.Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Grizu-263 Space Team launches Turkey's smallest 5-centimetre mini pocket satellite into space, becoming the second university in Turkey to send a satellite into space.
Why Grizu-263?
Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Grizu-263 Space Team announced that they chose this name to keep the names of 263 mining martyrs who lost their lives in the griz explosion that occurred in Zonguldak Kozlu on 3 March 1992 alive in space.
What is a Pocket Satellite?
Pocket satellites are small miniature type satellites with cube dimensions of about 5 cm on a side and weighing up to 250 g. Firstly, considering the increasing cost of cube satellites, LEO was launched to Low Earth Orbit in 2009. Pocket Satellites, which have lower production and operation costs compared to other satellites, are especially preferred in training activities.
Mobile satellites are used for earth observation using optical instruments, gravity field monitoring, in situ measurements of the space environment and data acquisition from low-cost reconnaissance vehicles around celestial bodies.
