Türkiye's first hydrogen-powered boat, Martı, has begun production at the Tuzla Shipyard. “Martı” will be completed and sailing in the waters of the Golden Horn in April of this year.
The Martı-Hydrogen Boat, the first product of the İTÜ İstiklal Project Design and Application Society, formed by engineers and engineering students from İTÜ (Istanbul Technical University), is being produced entirely by the society, from its design to its electrical system. The Martı-Hydrogen Boat operates using fuel cell technology that generates electrical energy by combining compressed hydrogen gas with oxygen gas in the atmosphere. Moreover, it releases only pure water into the environment as waste. Designed to carry 6 passengers and 2 crew members, the boat is 8.13 meters long and 3.2 meters wide. Using an 8-kilowatt fuel cell, the boat will tour the Golden Horn at a speed of 7 nautical miles per hour.
