Turkey is taking another historic step in its Africa initiative strategy by deepening its strategic partnership with Nigeria, the continent's largest economy and most populous country. Among the nine critical agreements signed between President Erdoğan and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who made his first official visit to Ankara, the Military Cooperation Protocol stands out. The two leaders agreed to increase trade volume to $5 billion and to involve TPAO and BOTAŞ in the energy sector.

Turkey, using its defense industry products as a diplomatic power multiplier, is taking its relations with Nigeria, one of its closest partners in Sub-Saharan Africa, to a new level. Inter-delegation meetings held at the Presidential Palace resulted in strategic decisions across a wide range of areas, from defense and energy to education and trade. With the signed agreements, Türkiye's experience in counter-terrorism and its defense technologies are being integrated into Nigeria's security architecture.

A Joint Front in the Defense Industry and the Fight Against Terrorism

The most strategic outcome of the meeting was the Military Cooperation Protocol signed between the two countries. Türkiye's support is critically important in Nigeria's fight against terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, particularly in the Sahel region.

President Erdoğan, “Under the leadership of Mr. Tinubu, we stand with the friendly people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism.” He stated that Türkiye was ready to share its capabilities in military training and intelligence.

In this context:

  • Defense Procurement: It was announced that Nigerian officials held direct meetings with leading Turkish defense industry companies (ASELSAN, TUSAŞ, Baykar, Roketsan, etc.) during the visit. These meetings are expected to result in exports of UAVs, armored vehicles, and ammunition to Nigeria in the near future.
  • Sharing Experience: Türkiye's experience in border security and asymmetric warfare will be used in the modernization of the Nigerian army.

Massive Energy Collaboration: TPAO and BOTAŞ Enter the Field

Cooperation in the energy sector with Nigeria, Africa's largest oil and natural gas producer, was also one of the most important issues on the agenda. President Erdoğan announced that Turkish companies would play an active role in the restructuring process of Nigeria's energy sector.

Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) And BOTAS‘Erdoğan stated that they attach importance to cooperation with Nigerian organizations and emphasized that they want to evaluate the potential in this area in both investment and commercial terms. This move is considered a strategic gain for Türkiye's energy supply security and the global operational capabilities of Turkish energy companies.

Target of $5 Billion in Trade Volume

Economic relations with Nigeria, a huge market with a population of 230 million, are also being accelerated. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the goal of increasing the current trade volume to $5 billion in a short time. The Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), established for this purpose, will function as the main mechanism for removing trade barriers and promoting investment.

9 Key Agreements Signed

During the visit, memoranda of understanding and agreements were signed between Türkiye and Nigeria in 9 different areas ranging from defense to media, education to trade:

  1. Military Cooperation Protocol
  2. Joint Statement of the Joint Committee on Economics and Trade (JETCO)
  3. Cooperation Agreement in the Field of Education
  4. Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Media and Communication
  5. Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Higher Education
  6. Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Halal Quality Infrastructure
  7. Cooperation in the Field of Diaspora Politics
  8. Cooperation Between Diplomatic Academies
  9. Cooperation in the Field of Family and Social Policies

With this visit, Türkiye has shifted its presence in Africa from a purely humanitarian aid model to a sustainable and mutually beneficial one based on defense, energy, and trade partnerships.
