The Turkish defense industry has brought yet another concrete example of the proverb "a bad neighbor makes you a homeowner" to the world stage. The Denizhan-76 National Naval Gun, developed by the Machinery and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE) and nationalizing the striking power of the Turkish Navy, achieved its first export success with Romania, a European and NATO country. This sale, confirmed by MKE's official announcement, is not only a commercial success but also a strategic testament to how the covert embargoes imposed on Türkiye have backfired.
Born Out of Necessity: The Italian Embargo and the Localization Process
The driving force behind the Denizhan-76 project was the supply problems Türkiye faced. For many years, the Turkish Navy used 76 mm main guns manufactured by the Italian company OTO Melara as standard on its ships. These guns were among the most widely used systems in the world's navies. However, following Türkiye's counter-terrorism operations and its resolute stance in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Italian government began to implement delays and covert embargoes in the supply processes.
The difficulties in obtaining these cannons, particularly for the ships produced under the MİLGEM project, and the exorbitant price increases, made a domestic solution necessary. MKE started working to fill this strategic gap in 2020. With the coordination of the relevant state units and the intensive work of MKE engineers, an R&D process that would normally take years was completed in a record time of approximately 12 months.
Historical Process and Testing Phases
The development timeline of Denizhan-76 is highly significant in demonstrating the swift response of Turkish engineering in times of crisis. The first tangible result of the project, live-fire tests, was successfully carried out in August 2021. Following these land tests conducted in Konya Karapınar, the process was accelerated to adapt the system to sea conditions.
For sea trials, TCG Beykoz, a Burak-class corvette, was selected. The Denizhan-76 system, integrated into the bow of the ship, successfully passed port and sea trials, hitting targets with pinpoint accuracy using live ammunition. These tests proved that the gun not only functions mechanically but is also fully compatible with the ship's fire control systems and combat management system (GENESIS/ADVENT). Having received serial production approval in 2022, the system has begun to be installed on new ships of the Turkish navy.
MKE Denizhan-76 Technical Specifications and Capabilities
This technology, which only a few countries in the world can produce, is one of the most effective weapons ships can have against air, surface, and land targets. The prominent technical features of the Denizhan-76 are as follows:
- Diameter: 76 mm
- Barrel Length: 4,700 mm (62 caliber)
- Rate of Fire: 80 beats per minute
- Range: With standard ammunition, it can reach 16 km, and with extended-range ammunition, it can reach over 20 km.
- Ammunition Supply: The rotating ammunition system allows for the selection of different ammunition types.
- Cooling System: Continuous firing capability thanks to the barrel cooling system using seawater.
- Low Radar Signature: A mug design compatible with stealth technology.
- Control: Fully digital fire control system and domestically developed software.
The system provides high effectiveness, especially in air defense warfare against aircraft and guided missiles, and in surface warfare against enemy ships. Its ability to fire 80 rounds per minute allows for a concentrated firepower to be delivered to the target.
Romanian Exports: A Turkish Mark on the NATO and EU Markets
According to a statement by MKE, the Denizhan-76 system has been added to the Romanian Navy's inventory as part of the export of the TCG Akhisar ship. This development signifies that the system has proven its worth on the international stage. Romania's status as both a NATO member and a European Union country further enhances the value of this export.
NATO countries generally place great importance on compliance with the "NATO Standard" (STANAG) and the proven track record of weapon systems when procuring them. The fact that the Denizhan-76 was preferred in the European market, including by its original manufacturer Italy, demonstrates how competitive Turkish defense industry products are in terms of quality and cost-effectiveness. This sale will pave the way for other friendly and allied countries to prefer the Turkish-made Denizhan-76 over its Italian counterpart in the future.
MKE Denizhan-76 is the clearest example of how a country, which was being hampered by embargoes, used these obstacles as stepping stones to reach the top.
