The global security architecture is rapidly reshaping. In this major transformation, Türkiye is increasingly standing out as a strategic technology centre. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made a highly critical visit during his engagements in Ankara. Rutte and his accompanying delegation directly visited ASELSAN's Gölbaşı Campus. The President of the Presidency of Defence Industries, Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, and ASELSAN General Manager Ahmet Akyol hosted this high-level alliance delegation. This strategic meeting transparently showcased the technological contributions of the Turkish defence industry to NATO. The highest-level official of NATO personally inspected the R&D and mass production power of Turkish engineering on the production lines.
Gölbaşı Campus and NATO's Needs
Why was the Gölbaşı Campus specifically chosen? Because the ASELSAN Gölbaşı facility constitutes the heart of the company's radar, electronic warfare, and electro-optics (REHİS) technologies. Ongoing regional wars and asymmetric crises have clearly revealed NATO's massive equipment needs in air defence and electronic warfare. The delegation did not merely take a static tour of the facility. The visitors witnessed the mass production processes of high-tech platforms such as air defence radars and advanced electronic attack systems on-site.

ASELSAN General Manager Ahmet Akyol stated that they briefed the delegation on the company's new investments and innovation ecosystem. Akyol also particularly emphasised that they showcased high-tech systems. Currently, the European defence industry is experiencing a serious production capacity and supply chain bottleneck. In stark contrast, with its powerful mass production capabilities, ASELSAN can deploy these strategic products to the field in very short timeframes. Therefore, Türkiye is among the alliance's most reliable equipment providers in terms of production speed and engineering quality.
Changing Roles in the European Security Architecture
Following the visit, the President of the Presidency of Defence Industries, Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, made a very clear strategic analysis. Görgün stated that this contact strongly conveyed Türkiye's complementary role within the NATO and European security architecture. In past years, allies saw Türkiye primarily as a manpower-oriented military barrier protecting only NATO's southeastern flank. Today, however, the situation has completely changed. Türkiye produces its own Steel Dome air defence systems, electronic warfare networks, and autonomous systems.
Moreover, these produced domestic platforms are designed to be fully compatible with NATO standards. An early warning radar produced by ASELSAN can instantly and flawlessly transmit intelligence to a NATO command centre in Europe via data networks. Therefore, Türkiye provides a direct and unique added value to the alliance's deterrence not only with its military personnel but also with the high technology it produces.
Rutte Praises Young Engineers: "ASELSAN Attracts Türkiye's Best Talent"
During NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's visit, one of the most significant elements that caught his attention was not just the high-tech hardware, but the young engineering workforce designing these systems. Speaking admiringly of the dynamism of the human resources at the facility, Rutte made the following sincere and striking remarks:
"The average age at ASELSAN is just 28... That's truly incredible. This company makes me feel very old. It attracts the best talent in Türkiye. But we need all companies to do the same."
Rutte's notable assessment certifies at the highest international level that the driving force behind the global success achieved by the Turkish defence industry is its bright, young engineers. This praise from the summit of the alliance once again reveals how critical brainpower is in defence technologies.
Historic Emphasis from Rutte: Türkiye Has Experienced a Revolution in its Defence Industry
During the visit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, meeting with the delegation and young engineers, summarised the distance Türkiye has covered in its defence industry with the word revolution. Drawing attention to ASELSAN's pioneering role in this transformation, Rutte made the following striking assessment:
"Türkiye has experienced a revolution in its defence industry. I can say that there has been a real revolution in recent years. ASELSAN is at the forefront of this. Please continue like this; produce more, faster, and innovate."
Türkiye as a Reliable Global Partner
Mark Rutte's visit to ASELSAN carries strategic meanings far beyond a routine diplomatic courtesy visit. As stated in Ahmet Akyol's message, the company resolutely continues to be a reliable partner in global security. The most advanced engineering solutions that will enhance the collective strength of the alliance now originate directly from the intelligence and production lines of Turkish engineers.
In the coming period, Turkish defence industry products and systems are expected to enter the inventories of other NATO member allied countries much more rapidly. Ultimately, Türkiye proves once again at the summit of NATO that it is one of the greatest guarantors of global peace with its technological sovereignty and innovative solutions.
