Having launched and begun mass production of the national electric train sets, Turkey Rail Systems Vehicles Industry Inc. (TÜRASAŞ) has now turned its attention to the "Zero Emission" goal. With this historic agreement, announced by Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu on his social media account, Turkey has initiated a project for hydrogen technology that will end diesel dependence on railways and reduce its carbon footprint to zero.
Partnership with the UK, Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights at TÜRASAŞ.
The most important feature that distinguishes this agreement from a typical technology transfer is..., Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights (IP) Sensitivity regarding this issue. While in international consortia the technology usually belongs to the foreign partner, Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that in this project, the rules would work in Türkiye's favor.
Accordingly:
- Central Türkiye: The project's R&D and production center will be located at TÜRASAŞ facilities.
- National Technology: All intellectual property rights (license, patent, sales rights) for the hydrogen-powered train to be developed will remain domestically owned by TÜRASAŞ.
- Information Transfer: The collaboration with the UK will elevate the expertise of Turkish engineers in hydrogen fuel cell technology and integration to a global level.
Goal: To become a "Regional Hub" in Hydrogen Technology
The global railway industry is switching from diesel trains to hydrogen-fueled trains (Hydrail) on lines where electrification is costly. With this project, TÜRASAŞ aims not only to meet the needs of the domestic market but also to become a supplier for neighboring countries.
Minister Uraloğlu outlined his goals as follows:; “"To transform TÜRASAŞ into a regional hub for hydrogen technology"” He summarized it with these words. This vision means that Türkiye will enter the highest value-added segment in railway vehicle exports.
Why Hydrogen?
Hydrogen trains generate electricity by reacting hydrogen with oxygen in their fuel cells, and this energy is transmitted to the engines. Instead of exhaust fumes, only hydrogen is emitted. water vapor These trains, which are currently in operation, are considered the pinnacle of "Green Transportation." TÜRASAŞ's move is also fully aligned with Türkiye's 2053 Net Zero Emissions target.
