The rapprochement between Turkey and the UK in the defense industry has reached a new dimension with the Eurofighter Typhoon negotiations, and a noteworthy "swap" proposal has come from the UK. Nicholas Drummond, a renowned British defense strategist and former officer, suggested that in exchange for the sale of Typhoon jets, the UK could procure Otokar-made Tulpar Armored Combat Vehicles (ACVs) as part of an "offset" (industrial participation). Drummond described the Tulpar as an "excellent option.".
Türkiye's interest in acquiring Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, produced by a consortium of the UK, Germany, Spain, and Italy to modernize its air force, continues to resonate in European capitals. The process has accelerated with Germany lifting its blockade on the sale, while in British defense circles... “"What can we get from Türkiye in return for this sale?"” The question began to be debated.
Nicholas Drummond, a British strategist known for his defense industry analyses, suggested a Turkish solution to the British Army's chronic armored vehicle problem in a post on his social media account.
Türkiye Will Demand Reciprocity, Tulpar Is the Best Candidate
Drummond stated that the export of BAE Systems' Typhoon aircraft to Türkiye was great news, and emphasized that Ankara would rightfully demand an offset in return for this large purchase.
Drummond stated that, considering the needs of the British Army and budget constraints, Otokar's Tulpar platform was the most logical option, saying:
“BAE Systems” export sale of its Typhoon aircraft to Türkiye is excellent news, but it’s likely Türkiye will want some kind of reciprocal offset. One option could be the Otokar Tulpar ZMA.”
Why Tulpar? Compatible with British Towers and Engines.
Drummond listed the technical reasons why Tulpar is an ideal candidate for the British Army. Referring to Britain's cancelled or troubled armoured vehicle projects (Warrior CSP and Ajax), the strategist highlighted Tulpar's mature and adaptable structure:
- Proven Design: Drummond emphasized that the Tulpar platform is reasonably mature, noting that it has been in the field since 2013 and has hundreds of vehicles in the order/production line.
- British Engine Integration: He stated that the vehicle's powertrain could use a Cummins V8 diesel engine, which is of British origin or widely produced in the UK, and that this would contribute to the British industry.
- Tower Compatibility: One of the most critical technical details is turret integration. Drummond stated that the Tulpar's hull could be fitted with Warrior CSP and Ajax turrets, which are currently in the possession of or being developed by the British Army.
- Attractive Price: Drummond, highlighting Tulpar's cost-effectiveness compared to its Western competitors, “"Another advantage is its very attractive price."” He made the comment.
Turkish Solution to Britain's Armored Ship Crisis
Britain has long been grappling with serious problems in modernizing its land forces. Vibration and noise issues with the Ajax armored vehicle project, along with the cancellation of the Warrior modernization, risk leaving British infantry without a modern armored vehicle.
Otokar's Tulpar stands out as a platform that meets NATO standards, has a modular structure, and has been tested in the most challenging terrain conditions. In this period when the Turkish defense industry has risen to the position of not only a buyer but also a seller, the export of Tulpar to the UK in exchange for Typhoon jets could be a historic reverse offset success for Turkey.
