Pardus 2007, the latest stable version of the national operating system Pardus, will be available for download from www.pardus.org.tr starting at 11:00 AM on December 18, 2006. Pardus 2007 remains free of charge.

Pardus is being developed within the TÜBİTAK UEKAE (National Electronic and Cryptology Research Institute) as part of a project launched in late 2003. Developed by a team of 15 experienced and competent individuals, Pardus has also garnered the support of a large community of volunteer contributors.
Pardus is an open-source operating system built around the Linux kernel and consisting of application software that is generally distributed freely under the GPL (General Public License). According to the GPL, you can run Pardus on as many machines as you like, browse and freely modify its source code, and redistribute it without altering the GPL license.
Open-source software has many advantages over closed-source software. Chief among these is security. Open-source software, by its very nature, is scrutinized by tens of thousands of eyes from the development process to the usage stage. It is impossible for a malicious programmer or organization to hide a piece of code in such an environment. Furthermore, because the source is open, potential security vulnerabilities can be patched quickly. Another advantage of the Linux platform is that threats such as viruses, Trojans, worms, and spyware are virtually nonexistent in this environment.
The ability to freely modify the source code according to needs and requirements, and adapt it to serve new purposes, gives the software unique flexibility. Developed in collaboration with the global Linux community, the operating system provides significant savings in total cost of ownership, both through its licensing method and its ease of maintenance and management.
