Şişecam has developed segmented smart glass technology for Togg's T10F model. The company describes this work as a significant innovation in the automotive sector and notes that the project is Şişecam's first smart glass application at OEM level.
Zonal Control in the Glass Roof
The smart glass is based on PDLC technology used in the panoramic glass roof. PDLC stands for polymer-dispersed liquid crystal. In this technology, liquid crystals placed between two layers inside the glass do not transmit light when in their normally randomly distributed state, giving the glass a frosted or tinted appearance. When an electric current is applied, the crystals align in a specific direction and the glass becomes transparent. When the current is cut, the crystals return to their previous state and the glass darkens again. In other words, the system can switch between two states without consuming electricity continuously. In the solution Şişecam has developed for the T10F, this principle is applied separately to different zones of the glass roof, enabling the light transmittance to be controlled zonally. In its closed position, the glass takes on a tinted appearance, combining aesthetics with comfort.
The Glass Communicates with the Vehicle's Systems
Another part of the project is the control unit (ECU), also developed by Şişecam. This unit enables the smart glass to work in integration with the vehicle's systems. The glass thus ceases to be a standalone component and becomes part of the vehicle's software and electronic architecture. Centring on user experience, this system offers an infrastructure that can be easily managed from the car's digital displays or its voice command assistant.
Domestic Engineering Competence
Şişecam states that the project brings together materials science, electronics, vehicle integration and homologation processes. In other words, the work is not limited to glass production but also covers the electronics and integration side. The company notes that the engineering competencies gained through this project will form the infrastructure for next-generation smart glass solutions to be developed in the future.
A First at OEM Level
This particular work, which combines materials science and vehicle electronics integration processes, has gone down as Şişecam's first smart glass project implemented at OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) level. While the "seamless panoramic glass roof" is offered to users as an optional feature in the current Togg T10F equipment catalogue dated June 2026, the technology behind this glass roof has come to light through Şişecam's statement. The panoramic glass roof, listed as an optional feature in the current catalogue, is expected to be equipped with this domestic and smart dimming technology developed by Şişecam, offering users a far more premium cabin experience.
The joint development of glass, electronics and integration by a domestic supplier for a domestic car is a notable example of added value remaining in the country within the automotive supply chain. The competencies Şişecam has gained through this project could pave the way for smart glass solutions to be developed for different vehicle models and manufacturers in the period ahead.
