Istanbul's public transport fleet is entering a significant renewal process. A contract for 150 Karsan ATAK vehicles has been signed between Karsan and the Istanbul Electricity, Tramway and Tunnel General Directorate (İETT). The project, whose first deliveries are planned to begin at the end of January 2027, will carry Karsan's experience in urban public transport to the challenging operational conditions of a metropolis such as Istanbul, with its high population and traffic density.
Why ATAK for Istanbul?
Measuring 8 metres in length, the Karsan ATAK strikes a balance between capacity and operational agility in urban public transport, with a passenger capacity of up to 56. Thanks to its low turning radius and high manoeuvrability, the vehicle can move easily in narrow streets and heavy traffic conditions, while its high climbing capability makes it suited to Istanbul's hilly routes. Its Euro 6 turbo diesel engine, producing 137 kW of power, combines performance with fuel economy. SCR, DPF and EGR technologies also support low emission values.
Passenger Comfort and Accessibility
Alongside operational efficiency, the ATAK offers strong features in terms of passenger comfort and accessibility. Its low-entry structure, kneeling function and wheelchair ramp make access easier for different passenger profiles. Its spacious interior, powerful air conditioning system and USB charging ports provide a comfortable experience on urban journeys.
"Karsan, the Creator of the 8-Metre Segment"
Karsan Domestic Sales and External Relations Deputy General Manager Muzaffer Arpacıoğlu described the contract as "a strong indication of Karsan's experience and product competence in urban public transport." Stating, "Karsan, the creator of the 8-metre class in Türkiye, is today the most preferred brand in this segment," Arpacıoğlu said: "Having won such a significant tender for 150 vehicles in a single order consolidates our leadership in the 8-metre segment while taking our strong position in the Turkish market to a further level."
