SOM Cruise Missile Enters Inventory with Domestic Engine: Kale's KTJ-3200S Turbojet in Service

Kale Jet Engines' KTJ-3200S turbojet engine has entered the Air Force inventory with the ROKETSAN-produced SOM Cruise Missile. SOM now flies with a fully domestic engine.

A new domestic engine technology has joined the inventory of the Turkish Armed Forces. The KTJ-3200S turbojet missile engine developed by Kale Jet Engines has entered the inventory of the Air Force Command together with the SOM Cruise Missile produced by ROKETSAN.

The Domestic Engine Era for SOM

According to Kale Jet Engines' statement, the KTJ-3200S will power the SOM Cruise Missile. SOM is an air-to-ground cruise missile family developed by TÜBİTAK-SAGE and produced by ROKETSAN. Standing out for its long-range precision strike capability, SOM offers the ability to engage strategic targets without entering the engagement envelope of enemy air defence systems. Until now, foreign-origin engines were used in SOM missiles. With the KTJ-3200S entering the inventory, external dependency in this field is being reduced.

The Strategic Importance of the KTJ-3200S

Turbojet engines are critical components that enable cruise missiles to reach high speeds and remain airborne for long periods. The domestic production of these engines carries strategic importance in terms of the supply security of missile systems. Kale Jet Engines had previously powered the SOM and ATMACA missiles with the KTJ-3200 engine it developed. The KTJ-3200S, meanwhile, is a new version of this family, adapted specifically for SOM.

In Kale Jet Engines' post, it was stated: "We develop, we produce; we become the driving force of our Turkish Armed Forces and our export customers." The post emphasised the cooperation between ROKETSAN, Kale Jet Engines and TÜBİTAK-SAGE. This three-way structure demonstrates that the entire process, from the development of SOM to its production and engine supply, is carried out by domestic actors.

Why Is SOM's Domestic Engine a Game-Changer?

The SOM Cruise Missile entering the inventory with the KTJ-3200S demonstrates the level of independence Türkiye has reached in cruise missile technology. The fact that the engines previously used in SOM missiles came from foreign suppliers constituted a significant constraint in terms of export potential. When Türkiye wanted to sell SOM to friendly and allied nations, it remained dependent on the engine supplier's export permission. With the KTJ-3200S entering service, this constraint is removed, and SOM becomes a fully independent export product.

This development also strengthens Kale Jet Engines' position in the Turkish defence industry. The company had previously exported the KTJ-3200 engine for Brazil's MANSUP-ER anti-ship missile. Now, with SOM entering the inventory with a domestic engine, Kale proves that it is a reliable engine supplier in both the domestic and foreign markets. In the period ahead, the use of domestic engines is expected to become more widespread in other cruise missiles such as ATMACA, ÇAKIR and KARA ATMACA.

Türkiye's attainment of engine independence in its cruise missile ecosystem is important not only for the defence industry but also geopolitically. Long-range precision strike capability is one of the fundamental elements of Türkiye's regional deterrence. The domestic engine directly increases the sustainability of this capability and its export potential. The KTJ-3200S entering the inventory with SOM is recorded as a concrete indication of the maturity Türkiye has reached in missile technology.
