The new soldiers of the sky: kamikaze drones

ALPAGU and KARGU, the first domestically produced kamikaze attack drones, were showcased at IDEF 2017.

Defense Technologies Engineering (STM) unveiled its first domestically produced kamikaze attack drones, named ALPAGU and KARGU, at IDEF 2017.

At IDEF 2017, STM showcased autonomous drone systems for kamikaze and surveillance purposes, a first in Türkiye. Developed uniquely by Turkish engineers, these kamikaze drones, with their tactical features, will be used in asymmetric warfare, counter-terrorism, and security operations.

Fixed-Wing "Alpine": ALPAGU

The first of the systems introduced by STM takes its name from the Old Turkish word for "hero who attacks the enemy alone". ALPAGU. This mini UAV, which has a fixed-wing structure, is launched using a special launcher mechanism.

  • One Erin Air Force: Thanks to its lightweight design, ALPAGU can be easily carried and set up by a single soldier, providing real-time intelligence and fire support to units operating in the field.
  • Speed and Maneuverability: After launching from the launcher, the system deploys its aerodynamic surfaces and begins flight. Upon detecting its target, it dives at high speed to neutralize the threat.

Rotary Winged "Scout": KARGU

The other system introduced was one that means "observation tower on a mountaintop" and "hawk". KARGU. KARGU, which stands out with its rotary-wing (multicopter) structure, can perform missions in all types of terrain without needing a runway thanks to its vertical take-off and landing capability.

  • Autonomous Task Capability: Thanks to its advanced image processing algorithms, KARGU can autonomously track its target.
  • Silent and Deadly: The system, capable of approaching enemy elements undetected, eliminates the threat at its source with its anti-personnel warhead.

AI-Powered "See and Shoot" Technology

The most critical feature of these systems, introduced by STM General Manager Davut Yılmaz and his team, is their artificial intelligence and image processing capabilities. Both ALPAGU and KARGU operate on the "Man-in-the-Loop" principle.

The systems loitere (patrol) the target area under the operator's control, detect and lock onto the target using their optical systems, and dive upon the operator's final confirmation. This feature is critical for preventing civilian casualties and ensuring that only the identified threat is neutralized.
