Türk Telekom, Türkiye's long-established telecommunications operator, is launching a domestic "New Space" initiative. Plan-S Plan-S, established in 2021 as a subsidiary of Kontrolmatik Teknoloji and which quickly attracted attention with its test satellite launches, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Türk Telekom. With this agreement, Plan-S aims to bring its technology to Türk Telekom's extensive subscriber network.
The two companies will integrate Plan-S's low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites with Türk Telekom's terrestrial network, “"Connecta IoT Network"” The project aims to eliminate the coverage problem.
Partnership Between Young Entrepreneur and Industry Giant: Expanding Scope
Traditional GSM operators are limited by the geographical reach of their base stations. Mountainous regions, offshore areas, or agricultural lands often remain "blind spots." The collaboration between Türk Telekom and Plan-S envisions a hybrid model that enables satellites to reach these areas where terrestrial lines cannot.
The technical details and objectives of the agreement are as follows:
- Satellite-Powered IoT: The Connecta series satellites, developed and launched into space by Plan-S, will collect data from sensors on Earth and transmit it to the Türk Telekom network.
- Continuity: Devices used in areas such as power transmission lines, logistics tracking, or smart farming applications will continue to automatically send data via satellite even in areas without grid coverage.
- Mobile Operator Standard: The goal is to offer the service not at the level of an experimental project, but at "mobile operator standards" that will meet the industrial needs in the field.
Thousands of Terminal Devices Are Being Deployed to the Field
According to Plan-S's statement, this cooperation is not merely a declaration of intent, but is based on a concrete roadmap. The agreement includes numerous terminal device (Satellite-communicating modems) are planned to be procured and deployed in the field. These devices will enable remote monitoring of critical infrastructure in different regions of Türkiye.
Türkiye: A country that produces technology, not just uses it.
Founded in 2021 and having quickly succeeded in placing its own test satellites into orbit using SpaceX rockets, Plan-S is taking a significant step towards commercialization with this agreement. The company aims to transform Türkiye from merely a "user" in the satellite-based IoT (Internet of Things) market into a globally competitive player with its own technology.
We are witnessing a domestic version of the collaborations that began in the world with SpaceX's Starlink project between GSM operators (T-Mobile, etc.). The fact that Türk Telekom, Türkiye's largest operator, is sitting down at the table with Plan-S, a startup only 4 years old, shows the maturation of the domestic technology ecosystem. This partnership will both accelerate Plan-S's scale-up process and provide Türk Telekom with a technological advantage over its competitors.
