The Turkish defense industry, with the projects it has undertaken in recent years, is not only updating its inventory but also making moves that will change military doctrines on a regional and global scale. One of the most notable of these moves is undoubtedly the TAYFUN project, which is Türkiye's first Short-Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM). The recent successful test launch, announced by the President of the Presidency of Defense Industries, Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, demonstrates that another critical threshold has been crossed in the development process of TAYFUN and that the project is rapidly progressing towards operational maturity.
TAYFUN Project: Transition from Tactical Field to Strategic Dimension
Turkey has accumulated significant expertise in artillery rockets and tactical missiles (such as BORA/KHAN) over many years. However, the TAYFUN project is taking Türkiye to a different league in ballistic missile technology. Having achieved precision strike capability in the 280-kilometer range with the BORA missile, the Turkish Armed Forces are expanding this range with TAYFUN, gaining "deep strike" capability.
Why is this capacity increase important?
In the modern battlefield, the ability to strike enemy logistics centers, command and control buildings, air bases, and critical infrastructure far behind the front lines is the most crucial factor determining the fate of the war. TAYFUN offers Türkiye the capability to destroy these targets with conventional warheads, high precision, and at an unstoppable speed. The missile's ability to exit and re-enter the atmosphere to target creates an extremely difficult threat profile for existing air defense systems to counter.
