The Turkish defence industry is advancing with strong steps towards the final phase in one of South America's largest armoured vehicle modernisation projects. The Chief of Staff and 2nd Commander of the Brazilian Army, General Francisco Humberto Montenegro Junior, along with a military delegation, visited Otokar's facilities and inspected the next-generation TULPAR armoured vehicles on-site. This critical-level visit opens the doors to a potential billion-dollar sale and strategic partnership within the scope of Brazil's VBC (CC) and VBC (Fuz) procurement programmes. Türkiye's global footprint in armoured vehicle exports is expanding towards the South American continent.

Two Different Configurations and Firepower

The Brazilian army needs both a medium-class tank and an armoured infantry fighting vehicle in its current procurement programme. Otokar engineers have specifically configured the modular TULPAR platform for these two different missions. The vehicles displayed to the delegation attracted all attention with their superior firepower and survivability.

  • VBC (CC) - Medium-Class Tank: This version of TULPAR uses the Hitfact MK II 120 mm turret system produced by Italian company Leonardo. This turret offers the same firepower and logistical commonality as the Centauro II wheeled armoured vehicles recently inducted into Brazil's inventory. This configuration, capable of firing standard NATO ammunition, combines the immense firepower of heavy main battle tanks in a much lighter and more agile platform.
  • VBC (Fuz) - Armoured Fighting Vehicle: In this configuration, developed for infantry transport and direct fire support, Otokar uses a 30 mm Remotely Controlled Weapon System (RCWS). The system protects personnel against heavy ballistic and mine threats while providing high manoeuvrability in challenging terrain conditions.

Why Does Brazil Need New Vehicles?

The Brazilian Armed Forces are conducting a massive modernisation programme to replace its completely obsolete Leopard 1A5BR and M60A3 TTS tanks. Within the scope of the project, Brazil aims to initially procure 65 next-generation combat tanks and 78 armoured infantry vehicles.

According to international defence reports, Otokar has succeeded in becoming one of the final four competitors in this challenging tender, competing against world giants. TULPAR is fiercely competing with the world's most advanced platforms such as the Swedish CV90, the Spanish/Austrian ASCOD, and the German Lynx. General Montenegro Junior's high-level visit to Türkiye strongly proves that TULPAR more than meets the Brazilian army's demanding requirements, not just on paper but also in the field.

Possibility of Co-Production

Otokar's TULPAR platform is among the strongest candidates to become the Brazilian army's next-generation striking power. If the tender is won, the company will not limit the agreement solely to direct vehicle sales. Furthermore, due to Brazil's local industry participation requirements, Otokar will also take strategic steps such as local production and technology transfer (ToT) in the country.

If this massive export is successfully completed, the Turkish defence industry will have established a permanent and unshakeable supply chain in the South American market. TULPAR being preferred in one of the world's most challenging geographies will certainly accelerate other Latin American countries in turning their route directly towards Turkish armoured vehicles.
