Türkiye's high-resolution domestic satellite, GÖKTÜRK 2, has completed its third year in space. Launched into space on December 18, 2012, the satellite had completed 16,035 orbits around the Earth, captured 7,522 images, and scanned an area of 18,335,000 square kilometers as of December 18, 2015.

Produced through a partnership between TÜBİTAK UZAY and TUSAŞ, GÖKTÜRK 2, with a resolution of 2.5 meters, sends images from all over the world to the Air Force Command's Ahlatlıbel Ground Station.

GÖKTÜRK-2, which meets the satellite imagery needs of the Turkish Armed Forces and other public institutions and organizations, has also provided opportunities for the development of technology and necessary infrastructure in the space field, as well as the training of expert human resources.

The GÖKTÜRK 2 satellite, with a mass of 397 kilograms and a resolution of 2.5 meters, was manufactured in accordance with satellite development methods and standards applied worldwide. GÖKTÜRK 2 transmits real-time images it receives from Turkey and its surroundings to the ground station in Ankara.

Positioned in a sun-synchronous orbit 686 kilometers above the Earth, the satellite can capture images from any point on the planet. It orbits the Earth once every 98 minutes, passing over the North and South Poles once each orbit.
