Dr. Coşkun Kocabaş, a faculty member in the Physics Department at Bilkent University, has been awarded a Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council (ERC) for his project titled "Graphene-based smart surfaces: from visible wavelength to microwave wavelength".
Expected to usher in a new era in camouflage technologies, this technology allows a military tank to take on the appearance of a tree in a wooded area, while a fighter jet can appear as a bird.
Dr. Kocabaş proposes smart surfaces that can change their appearance across a very wide spectrum. These smart surfaces will be used to control the reflection of electromagnetic waves across a broad spectrum, from the visible to the microwave region. Graphene, a single-atom-thick carbon crystal, forms the basis of the technology to be developed. Dr. Kocabaş and his group aim to develop camouflage systems that operate over a very wide range using these smart surfaces.
