HÜRJET Performs Formation Flight with Turkish Stars: First 10-Aircraft Formation Flight in Turkish Aviation History

TAI's domestic jet trainer aircraft HÜRJET performed a historic formation flight by joining the Turkish Stars' 8-ship formation. For the first time in Turkish aviation, 10 aircraft flew in formation simultaneously.

The jet trainer and light combat aircraft HÜRJET, developed by TUSAŞ with domestic and national resources, has achieved a first in Turkish aviation history. Two HÜRJETs joined the Turkish Stars' 8-ship aerobatic team, performing a formation flight with a total of 10 aircraft. The Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) shared footage of this historic moment on its social media account.

Turkish Stars and HÜRJET in the Same Skies

In the video shared by the SSB with the caption "10 aircraft, one heart!", footage showed two HÜRJETs accompanying the Turkish Stars' 8-ship aerobatic team. This formation flight, conducted with 10 aircraft for the first time in Turkish aviation history, requires a high level of coordination and flight discipline for both aerobatics and formation flying.

The SSB's statement included the following: "HÜRJET, developed with domestic and national resources, soaring in the same skies with our Turkish Stars is the signature in the sky of our engineering and the level we have reached in aviation."

A Critical Milestone in HÜRJET's Development Process

This flight has been recorded as one of the significant milestones in HÜRJET's development schedule. Developed to replace the Turkish Air Force's T-38 trainer aircraft, HÜRJET will also be usable as a light combat aircraft. Capable of reaching supersonic speeds (Mach 1.4), the aircraft has a significant advantage over subsonic competitors like the Boeing/Saab T-7A.

HÜRJET was selected by the Spanish Air Force as its next-generation trainer aircraft under the name SAETA II, and a joint development process with Airbus Defence and Space was initiated. The Japanese press has also highlighted HÜRJET as a potential candidate to succeed the JASDF's T-4 trainer aircraft.

The Technical Significance of Formation Flight

HÜRJET's ability to perform formation flight with an aerobatic team requiring high precision, like the Turkish Stars, is a critical indicator of the aircraft's flight control systems and manoeuvrability. Being able to fly in the same formation as the Turkish Stars' NF-5 aircraft also demonstrates HÜRJET's ability to operate compatibly with different platforms.

Such formation flights are considered important training tools both for testing the technical maturity of the aircraft and for developing coordination among pilots. The seamless integration of two HÜRJETs into the 8-ship Turkish Stars formation is strong evidence of the aircraft's operational flexibility and reliability.
