The Muta Genesis Team, comprised of students from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at Istanbul Technical University's Faculty of Aeronautics and Space Sciences, came in third place in an aircraft engine design competition jointly organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Space (AIAA) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Gas Turbine Institute (ASME-IGTI).

ITU was represented in the competition by Associate Professor Dr. Onur Tunçer from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering and Muta Genesis team members Mohamad Barada, Utku Çaylan, Tim Roos, and Alberto M. Contreras.

The 2015 competition concept was defined as the development of conceptual designs for ultra-high bypass ratio turbofan engines projected for use in next-generation Airbus A380 & A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft by 2025 and beyond. The team members stated that their innovative ceramic matrix composite material technology increased the thermal efficiency of the core engine, allowing it to easily drive the fan of the ultra-high bypass ratio engine. Furthermore, they noted that the new fuel and noise reduction technologies used in the design made the engine significantly more environmentally friendly than the base engines, the Trent 100 and Trent XWB.
