Pardus, the national operating system that launched with the slogan "For Freedom!" and released its first stable version in 2005, has turned 16 years old.
The initial work on the Pardus project began in 2003 within the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Institution (TÜBİTAK) Information and Information Security Advanced Technologies Research Center (BİLGEM). First, the requirements, similar applications worldwide, the country's human resources in the field of information technology, the capabilities of the local software industry, and competitive factors were examined. Based on these findings, concrete planning began in the summer of 2003. Existing operating systems, primarily Linux, were examined, and the open-source software methodology and free software philosophy were studied. As a result of these studies, in the autumn of 2003, it was decided to create a Linux-based, open-source operating system distribution using the GPL licensing method as much as possible.
