Thermal cameras and night vision binoculars, which are vital for tracking terrorists in military operations, will soon be produced entirely in Türkiye. The Ministry of Defense, in a joint effort with TÜBİTAK and METU, has successfully developed a thermal camera sensor in the "Infrared Thermal Sensor Project".

Thermal cameras, which are the eyes and ears of soldiers during night operations, will now be produced entirely in Türkiye. Significant progress has been made in the Infrared Thermal Sensor Project, supported by the Ministry of Defense, the Undersecretariat of Defense Industry, and TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). METU Rector Prof. Dr. Ural Akbulut stated, "We have been working on this for nearly 10 years, and we have now reached the level of the most sensitive sensors produced in the world." Until now, thermal cameras, whose visibility depends on the sensitive sensor inside, were purchased from abroad, resulting in limited visibility and quality.

Prof. Dr. Cengiz Beşikçi, a faculty member at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, stated, "Due to the critical nature of this technology, only developed countries master it. They protect it below the necessary security level." However, scientists at METU have succeeded in creating world-class sensors using nanotechnology. Mass production will begin soon, and these sensors, manufactured in Türkiye, will yield much better results in night vision.

It will revolutionize healthcare.

Another phase of the thermal sensor project is underway at the METU microelectronics facilities. Here, micron-sized sensors are being produced using high technology. These sensors, called 'MEMS', are used in smart missiles and helicopters.

Prof. Dr. Tayfun Akın, a faculty member at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at METU (Middle East Technical University), said regarding the issue, "If there is a cancerous cell among blood cells, it will be possible to detect it even if only one out of a billion cells is cancerous.".

Experts also say that cancer can be diagnosed by looking at the body temperature using thermal cameras. In other words, these sensitive sensors are also used in the healthcare sector. The countdown has begun for the complete production of these sensors, used in many fields, primarily defense and healthcare, in Türkiye. Once mass production begins, millions of dollars currently spent abroad, especially in the defense and healthcare sectors, will remain in Türkiye.
