Türkiye's domestic defense industry initiative has achieved another success that will resonate globally. The Bayraktar AKINCI Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), developed by Baykar and equipped with the state-of-the-art MURAD AESA radar produced by ASELSAN, successfully completed its first test flight.

This development is considered a strategic turning point that strengthens Türkiye's air defense and attack capabilities.

The project, implemented through a collaboration between Baykar and ASELSAN, makes the AKINCI UAV one of the most effective tools in modern warfare. Known for its long-endurance capability and cruise missile launching ability, AKINCI now possesses much more precise target detection and tracking capabilities with the MURAD AESA radar. The success of the test flight demonstrates the progress Türkiye has made in reducing its dependence on foreign sources for high-technology defense systems.

Power, Applications and Technical Specifications of the MURAD AESA Radar

The MURAD radar, based on Active Electronic Scanning Array (AESA) technology, stands out with its superior performance. Designed with Gallium Nitride (GaN) based chip technology, the radar provides high energy efficiency and durability. MURAD operates with a network of thousands of tiny transceiver modules, enabling electronic beam steering without the need for mechanical parts. This feature allows for the detection of air targets at long distances (approximately 200 km range), multi-target tracking (the ability to track dozens of targets simultaneously), and maintaining reliability even in electronic warfare conditions. It also offers functions such as high-resolution ground imaging with synthetic aperture radar (SAR), wideband radar spectrum monitoring, and directional electronic jamming. MURAD's ability to simultaneously support air-to-air and air-to-ground operations, provide effective guidance to missile guidance systems, and its AI-powered automatic target classification capability make it stand out in its class. AESA radars are also used in satellite technologies, enabling high-resolution imaging of the Earth's surface and monitoring of threats from space. MURAD provides AKINCI with the capability to detect enemy radars, respond quickly in complex combat scenarios, and detect low-visibility (stealth) targets.

Why is owning an AESA radar so important?

This achievement demonstrates that Türkiye has not only developed a UAV but has also integrated it with one of the world's most advanced radar technologies. Powered by the MURAD AESA radar, the AKINCI is becoming a game-changing platform in modern warfare. By reducing its dependence on foreign sources and producing its own technology, Turkey is both increasing its defense capabilities and gaining a competitive advantage in the international market. Export agreements signed with countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia for the Bayraktar AKINCI prove the global impact of this success.

Having made a name for itself in the defense industry with projects such as the Altay tank and the TAI TF KAAN fighter jet, Türkiye is once again solidifying its place on the world stage with the AKINCI.
