The gravitational pull of the Turkish defence and aviation industry within the global ecosystem is increasing day by day. Piaggio Aerospace, the Italian aviation legend that recently made a strong comeback to the market with the strategic support of Turkish technology giant Baykar, has officially announced its participation in SAHA EXPO 2026, Türkiye's largest industrial gathering. The company will showcase both its advanced aviation platforms and its critical engine maintenance (MRO) capabilities at the event, which will be held at the Istanbul Expo Centre on May 5-9. This participation concretely demonstrates that European aviation companies, restructured with Turkish capital and vision, are beginning to integrate with Türkiye's defence ecosystem.
P.180 Mantide MMP: Multi-Mission Special Purpose Aircraft
At the SAHA EXPO 2026 fair, Piaggio Aerospace will particularly highlight the P.180 Mantide Multi-Mission Platform (MMP) aircraft. This platform represents the militarised version of the brand's world-renowned iconic business jet, the P.180 Avanti, adapted directly for special missions.
Designed for tactical and strategic missions, the Mantide MMP can be used for air ambulance, radio calibration, aerial photography (mapping), and maritime patrol missions. The aircraft's pusher propeller configuration and three-lifting-surface architecture provide a smooth, unobstructed field of view for radomes and electro-optical sensors mounted under the fuselage. Capable of flying at business jet speeds yet with the low operating costs of a turboprop, the Mantide offers unique operational efficiency, especially for long-duration maritime patrol and border surveillance missions.
The Hidden Power Behind F-35 and Chinook Engines: Piaggio
Automotive and aviation enthusiasts usually know the Piaggio brand for its uniquely designed aircraft. However, the company is also among Europe's most strategic suppliers in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of military aviation engines and the production of critical engine components.
The company produces sub-components for the Pratt & Whitney F135 engine that powers fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets. Additionally, Piaggio plays a key role in the maintenance of Rolls-Royce Gem and Viper engines used on platforms that are predecessors to the A129 Atak helicopter, as well as Honeywell T55 engines powering the Italian Army's ICH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters. Considering that CH-47F Chinook helicopters are also actively used in the Turkish Armed Forces inventory, Piaggio bringing these MRO capabilities to Istanbul gains even more strategic significance for Türkiye.
Ecosystems Converging
Piaggio Aerospace's participation in SAHA EXPO 2026 is not merely about a foreign company exhibiting its products. This move represents the quest for a company supported by Baykar to establish new partnerships directly with the Turkish supply chain and defence industry stakeholders.
In the coming period, significant potential collaborations such as integrating ASELSAN's electro-optical cameras or radar systems onto Piaggio's special mission aircraft could come to the fore. Furthermore, strategic bridges could be established between TEI (TUSAŞ Engine Industries) and the Italian manufacturer regarding engine maintenance and repair capabilities. SAHA EXPO is transforming into the main headquarters where global defence players converge in a new-generation, Türkiye-centric ecosystem.
