Baykar, one of Türkiye's defense industry giants, has announced the new generation Baykar TB2T-AI Armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). According to information shared by Selçuk Bayraktar on his X account, the TB2T-AI stands out with its advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, turbo engine, and superior performance.
TB2T-AI, which took to the skies with test flights conducted in Keşan, once again demonstrates Türkiye's commitment to domestic technologies within the scope of its "National Technology Initiative".
The Incredible Features of TB2T-AI
The new Baykar TB2T-AI boasts advanced AI capabilities supported by three onboard computers. This AI system enables the drone to perform more sophisticated tasks such as autonomous flight, target acquisition, and mission planning. Furthermore, thanks to its turbo engine, it has increased its speed from 120 knots (approximately 138 mph) to 160 knots (approximately 184 mph), raising its maximum altitude from 25,000 feet to 30,000 feet. Surprisingly, the TB2T-AI can climb above 30,000 feet in less than 30 minutes, setting its own altitude record in tests in Keşan at 30,318 feet. With its increased maximum takeoff weight, it also has a greater payload capacity.
Comparison with the old TB2
The old Baykar TB2 used a Rotax 912 internal combustion engine producing 100 hp and was known for its limited AI capabilities. Its speed was limited to 120 knots and its maximum altitude to 25,000 feet. The new TB2T-AI, however, likely offers 172 hp with a TEI PD170 turbodiesel engine. This engine can run on JP-8 or Jet-A1 fuel and, thanks to its two-stage turbocharger system, delivers superior performance even at high altitudes. With a maximum altitude capacity of 45,000 feet, the TEI PD170 is also used in the TB3 model, reinforcing Baykar's success in domestic engine technology.
The table below summarizes the differences between the two models:
| Feature | Old TB2 | New TB2T-AI |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Rotax 912, 100 hp | Probably a TEI PD170, 172 hp. |
| Speed | 120 knot | 160 knot |
| Maximum Altitude | 25,000 feet | 30,000 feet |
| AI Capabilities | Limited, no special emphasis. | Three onboard computers, advanced |
| Maximum Takeoff Weight | 650 kg (estimated) | Higher, greater load. |
A New Turning Point in Türkiye's Defense Strategy
TB2T-AI is a project that supports Türkiye's domestic and national production goals in the defense industry. The Baykar TB2, previously used successfully in the Ukraine-Russia war and the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, is now gaining more advanced features with TB2T-AI. This model has the potential to change the balance of power on the battlefield.
Global Leadership Through Domestic Technology
The use of the TEI PD170 engine strengthens Türkiye's claim in aviation engine production. This engine, weighing 162 kg and offering high-altitude performance, has also been successfully used in Baykar's TB3 model. This shows that Türkiye is one step closer to its goals of reducing foreign dependence and becoming a global player in defense technologies.
The Future of TB2T-AI
Baykar TB2T-AI represents Türkiye's innovative vision in the defense industry. With its advanced AI capabilities, turbo engine, and enhanced performance, it will play a critical role in future military and reconnaissance operations. TB2T-AI, which is successfully continuing its test flights, aims to reinforce Türkiye's leadership in defense technologies and achieve a strong position in the global market.
