Bilkent University has produced a 'nano bulb (nano LED)' that saves 90% on energy costs.

Turkish researchers have produced a light source using nanotechnology.

Edison Bulb

Turkish researchers have produced a nanotechnology-based light source as an alternative to the light bulb invented by Edison.

Researchers from Bilkent University have revolutionized Edison's light bulbs a century later with their "adjustable white light" technology. While Edison's bulbs converted heat into light, nanocrystalline LEDs, produced using nanotechnology, convert electrical energy directly into light. These LED (Light Emitting Diode) based light sources are expected to have a lifespan of 23 years, leading to radical changes in automotive lighting systems.

90% SAVINGS: LED-based light sources, which provide 90% energy savings, are said to offer an alternative solution to the global warming problem. This work by Assistant Professor Dr. Hilmi Volkan Demir and his students Sedat Nizamoğlu, Tuncay Özel, and Emre Sarı from the Physics and Electrical and Electronics Engineering Departments of Bilkent University, was featured on the cover of the February 14, 2007 issue of “NANOTECHNOLOGY,” one of the world's most prestigious journals. Demir noted that his research group, which he heads, has achieved the world's first success in producing white light with adjustable color properties using nanocrystals. Demir stated that white LED light sources will find wide application in future lighting systems, and that all aspects of their work, including design, modeling, fabrication, experimental characterization, and institutional analysis, were carried out at the Bilkent University Nanotechnology Research Center and Advanced Research Laboratory.

LED TECHNOLOGY: Stating that LEDs currently have applications in areas such as traffic lights without bulbs, cameras, and microscope light sources, Demir noted: “LEDs will replace the light bulbs and fluorescent lamps we use in our homes. While Edison's light bulbs converted heat into light, LEDs produced with nanotechnology convert electrical energy directly into light. This discovery has the potential to completely change the interior and automotive lighting functions of the future. It is predicted that in the next 5 years, all exterior lighting functions of cars will be carried out with newly produced 'white LEDs'. In short, today's light bulbs, which work on the same principle as Edison's bulbs, have been replaced a century after their initial production thanks to 'white LED' light sources produced with nanotechnology.‘
