Three new ISTIF-class frigates will be built for the Navy.

Within the scope of the MİLGEM Project, contracts have been signed for three new İSTİF-class frigates.

MİLGEM I-Class Frigate

Within the scope of the İSTİF Class Frigates, which is a continuation of the MİLGEM Project carried out by the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey's Defence Industry Directorate, a contract has been signed for the construction of three new frigates.

Within the scope of the project, an İSTİF Class Frigate will be constructed simultaneously at the Anadolu, Sedef, and Sefine shipyards by the STM-TAİS partnership.

These frigates will be equipped with domestically developed sensor and weapon systems. National solutions such as the Gökdeniz close-in air defense system, the Cenk-S 3D search radar, the Akrep fire control radar, illumination radar, torpedo tubes, the National Vertical Launch System MİDLAS, and Hisar-D will also be featured on all three ships, increasing the localization rate. Furthermore, nationalization efforts will continue in many areas, including the main gun, helicopter tracking system, and various components of the main propulsion system.

Furthermore, the ARAS-2023 Diver Detection Sonar (DTS), developed by Armelsan, will be integrated into three frigates. The ARAS-2023 Diver Detection Sonar (DTS) can automatically detect and track the position of divers using open-circuit breathing systems, closed-circuit breathing systems, and diver transport vehicles coming from underwater. A total of three ARAS-2023 units will be used, continuing to protect our domestically produced platforms against all diving threats that may come from underwater.

The project's construction period will be 36 months, and all frigates will be delivered to the Naval Forces. These new frigates will be an important step for Türkiye's defense industry and will enhance the country's defense capabilities through the use of domestic solutions.

The signing ceremony was attended by SSB President Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir, Sedef Shipyard CEO and TAİS Board Chairman Metin Kalkavan, and ARMELSAN Board Chairman Yetkin Karakaş.

General Information About Stacked Class Frigates

The MİLGEM I-Class Frigate Project, which differs in structure from the ADA-class corvettes, is of critical importance to the Turkish defense industry due to the fact that a large portion of its weapon and electronic systems will be domestically produced. The I-Class Frigates stand out with their anti-submarine warfare, surface and air defense capabilities, advanced patrol activities, reconnaissance, surveillance, target detection, identification, recognition, and early warning features. The first domestically produced frigates, whose length has been increased by 10 meters due to equipment changes and additions in their weapon systems compared to the ADA class, have a displacement of 3100 tons, a length of 113 meters, and a width of 14.4 meters. The MİLGEM I-Class Frigate also differs from the ADA-class corvettes with its capability to carry air defense guided missiles.
