FNSS and PT Pindad are presenting the concept design of the MMWT (Modern Medium Weight Tank), a medium-weight tank solution that will bring a new dimension to the battlefield, at the Indo Defence 2016 exhibition held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from November 2-5.
With the completion of the concept design, production of the first prototypes of the MMWT has also begun. The agreement between Türkiye and Indonesia to initiate the project for the development of the MMWT was signed in 2014.
Developed to respond to emerging threats in the modern battlefield, the MMWT will provide the armed forces with a range of new capabilities. Lighter and smaller than main battle tanks (MBTs), the MMWT will be a significant force multiplier in terrain conditions where MBTs are unable to operate, particularly due to their weight, and in geographical areas where infrastructure such as bridges is also inaccessible to MBTs due to their weight.
The tasks where MMWT will truly make a difference on the battlefield are:
- The ability to fight in very different environmental conditions and to apply firepower at short, medium or long range against a wide variety of targets.
- The firepower can be used in a wide range of applications, from close infantry support to armor-destroying missions.
- Its ability to provide fire support very quickly and in a very short time, and to provide an adequate level of protection against known warfare threats.
To accomplish these tasks, the MMWT will combine an effective main weapon with a fire control system that increases the probability of a first-shot hit. While capable of engaging targets at long range, the MMWT will also utilize a 7.62 mm machine gun as a secondary weapon at close range.
