The "Istanbul Taxi Design Competition," organized by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and aiming to contribute to the city's brand value, now gives Istanbul residents a voice. The public voting process to determine a technologically advanced, safe, and disabled-accessible taxi "unique to Istanbul" begins on Wednesday, June 15, 2011.
Istanbul, one of the world's most important metropolises, is counting down the days until it gets its own taxi design that reflects its identity. In a nationwide competition that attracted great interest from designers, the finalists are being presented to the public after the jury's evaluation. The voting process continues until June 29, 2011.
Technology, Security and Accessible Transportation
The competition aims not only to design an aesthetically pleasing vehicle shell, but also to offer a holistic transportation solution. The main criteria sought in the projects submitted to the competition are as follows:
- High technology: Integrated with current navigation, payment, and communication systems.
- Secuirty: Advanced safety measures for both driver and passenger (panic button, safe cabin, etc.).
- Accessibility: Universal design principles that allow for comfortable use by disabled citizens and families with strollers.
4 Different Fields, 3 Different Categories
The competition, which mobilizes the design ecosystem, addresses the taxi industry as a whole. Projects compete in four main categories: General Taxi Design, Eco-Vehicle Taxi Design, and Taxi Stand and Taxi Communication Systems Design.
Participation takes place at three different levels: Professionals, University Students, and Secondary School Incentive Category. The winning project, chosen by the votes of Istanbul residents, is preparing to take its place on the streets of the city.
