Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has formally confirmed, for the first time, Turkish investors' plans to develop a new port in the Warsheekh area near Mogadishu. According to a report by Somali Eye, the project, valued at approximately $4 billion, is expected to encompass a port, a special economic zone and industrial facilities.
Public-Private Partnership Model
Prime Minister Hamza announced that the government had reached an agreement with Turkish investors to develop the project under a public-private partnership model. Notably, the project site is also located close to the site of Somalia's planned satellite launch facility. This proximity indicates that the region is intended to be positioned not only as a commercial hub but also as a strategic technology and logistics centre.
Airport Investment Interest from Qatar
Prime Minister Hamza also announced that Qatari investors have shown interest in investing in Mogadishu airport. He noted, however, that negotiations regarding the proposed investment are still ongoing.
"New Mogadishu" Project
Hamza also announced that construction has begun on a highway connecting the region to Mogadishu. This development is regarded as part of a broader development initiative known as "New Mogadishu," aimed at expanding the capital and increasing economic activity. Under the project, the port, economic zone, industrial facilities and transport infrastructure are intended to be developed in an integrated manner.
