TEMSA achieved significant success in production, sales, and exports in 2021, increasing its sales by 90 percent and its exports by 144 percent in the bus and midibus segment.
In 2021, TEMSA's total sales volume across all products increased by 122 percent compared to the previous year. TEMSA, which made its first-ever electric bus sale to Sweden, also sold 50 electric buses abroad in 2021.
TEMSA, which has been operating as a partnership between Sabancı Holding and PPF Group, a shareholder of Skoda Transportation, since the end of 2020, completed its first year under the new partnership structure with great success. Despite all the negative effects of the pandemic on the world economy and countries, TEMSA achieved significant results in production, sales and exports, and also reinforced its pioneering role in electric vehicles with its firsts both domestically and internationally.
Speaking at a press conference regarding TEMSA's 2021 business results, TEMSA CEO Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu stated that they had left behind a year overshadowed by the pandemic and vaccine studies, saying, “The tourism and transportation industries are perhaps the sectors that felt the direct impact of the pandemic most intensely in the world. However, in addition to COVID-related concerns in our priority markets abroad, such as the USA, Germany, France, and the UK, we witnessed numerous extraordinary developments in social and political terms. Despite all this and the challenging periods TEMSA has experienced in recent years, 2021 was a successful and symbolic year in which we rose again; a year in which we initiated TEMSA's return to its bright days. With the expertise and technological strength of Sabancı Holding and our sister company Skoda Transportation, we will take these successes to much higher levels in the coming period.”.
WE SOLD VEHICLES TO 18 COUNTRIES, INCREASING EXPORTS BY 4.
Sharing details regarding the 2021 results, Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu stated: “We achieved sales of approximately 2000 vehicles in the bus, minibus, and light truck segments. One of our biggest successes in 2021 was strengthening our strong position in exports. In this area, thanks to both our innovative products and our strengthened dealer network, we increased our exports by 144 percent in terms of units and sold vehicles to 18 different countries. TEMSA's total sales volume also increased by 122 percent compared to the previous year.’
WE HAVE LEFT BEHIND A YEAR FULL OF FIRSTS.
Adding that 2021 went down in TEMSA history, especially with the developments in electric vehicles, Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu said, ’Last year, we reaped the first fruits of TEMSA's long journey in electric vehicles and made the first electric vehicle delivery in TEMSA history to Sweden. On the other hand, we also produced our first electric vehicles bearing the logos of our sister company Skoda at our factory in Adana and delivered them to Prague. Furthermore, with the agreements we made with Romania, Serbia, Buzau, Arad, and Druskininkai, TEMSA's electric vehicles will be on the roads in these countries as well. In addition, our electric vehicle designed for intercity travel is currently undergoing pilot applications in Silicon Valley, California, USA, home to global technology giants. While we are doing these things abroad, we have also signed an agreement with Samsun Metropolitan Municipality for the launch of Türkiye's first 100% domestically produced electric bus, developed in collaboration with ASELSAN.“.
ONLY 1 ELECTRIC OUR VEHICLE ELIMINATES 1,400 TONS OF CO2.
Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu, who also shared his goals for 2022 and beyond, stated that achievements in the fields of sustainability and technology will be decisive for the future of companies. Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu stated that electric vehicles are the most important indicator of TEMSA's sustainability and technology vision, saying: “There are several elements at the core of our vision regarding electric vehicles. The first is our responsibility towards the environment. According to research by the International Energy Agency, the transportation sector accounts for 24% of global fuel-related emissions. 75% of this comes from land vehicles. Public transportation vehicles inherently reduce emissions. When we add electrification and hydrogen to this, it creates a multiplier effect. A 9-meter city bus removes an average of 60 vehicles from traffic. Or a 12-18 meter city bus can remove 90 to 120 cars from traffic. For example, just one of our Avenue Electron vehicles can save approximately 528,000 liters of fuel per year. This means stopping approximately 1,400 tons of CO2 emissions.’.
WE WILL LEAD THE WAY IN ACHIEVING THE 2030 AND 2040 COMMITMENTS.
Drawing attention to the commitments made at the recent COP26 Climate Summit, Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu said, “As a country, we have committed to reducing the carbon dioxide emissions of all new trucks and buses to zero from 2040 onwards. By 2030, we must reach 30 percent of this rate. As TEMSA, we will not only comply with these commitments of our country; we will also lead the way in this regard. We have prepared our own roadmap accordingly. Currently, 6 percent of our exports come from these zero-emission electric vehicles. This rate will increase every year, and our target is to increase this rate to 80 percent in 2025. In addition, in 2025, more than half of our total bus volume will be met by electric vehicles.’.
OUR EXPORTS PER KILOGRAM ARE 20 TIMES THE Türkiye AVERAGE.
Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu emphasized that TEMSA, with its technological products, is also a pioneer in value-added exports in its sector, stating, “In 2021, the unit value per kilogram of our country's exports was approximately $1.3. This is around $10-11 in our sector. When we look at TEMSA's exports, this figure is around $20 for conventional vehicles, while it exceeds $30 for electric vehicles. Therefore, TEMSA is making very significant contributions to our country's exports today. The widespread adoption of electric vehicles will significantly reinforce this contribution. Our biggest advantage here is that TEMSA has not yet completed its transformation into an automotive-focused technology company. TEMSA, which allocates approximately 4% of its annual turnover to R&D, has embraced innovation as a corporate culture, and with its TEMSATech structure in Adana, has even achieved the capability to develop its own battery packs, and is constantly improving its technology, will continue to lead the sector in all areas in which it operates in the coming period.’.
WE NEED A TOTAL MOBILIZATION.
Tolga Kaan Doğancıoğlu stated that there is a need for a comprehensive mobilization regarding electric vehicles in our country, saying, “We are ready for this with our technology, infrastructure, and human resources. Turkish industry and the Turkish automotive sector are ready. We currently have a huge opportunity. When we consider both the economic and environmental benefits, electric vehicles are one of the issues that will shed light on our country's economic development. The initial investment cost of electric vehicles is slightly higher than conventional vehicles. However, we all know that they are much more economical than diesel vehicles in 5-6 years of use. If there is an incentive system or financial support that can overcome the difficulty in the initial investment cost and alleviate the financing difficulties of local governments, the use of electric buses in public transportation will also increase rapidly.”.
