Türkiye's national ecosystem in space technologies continues to grow, fueled by both the dynamism of the private sector and the strategic strength of the defense industry. The newest and most significant step in this growth is..., ASELSAN developed by LUNA-1 Low Earth Orbit Internet of Things (IoT) Satellite‘The successful launch of the spacecraft by SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket marked a new level for Türkiye in the field of secure space-based data communication, with the first telemetry signals being received from the ground station in Ankara following the launch.
Successful Launch and First Signal: Data from LUNA-1 Begins Reaching Ankara.
Following extensive ground tests, LUNA-1, which began its space journey, sent its first signals to Earth as planned after successfully entering orbit. These telemetry data, received by ASELSAN's ground control station in Ankara, confirmed that all of the satellite's subsystems are functioning as expected and that it is ready to move to the operational phase. This successful communication demonstrates that one of the project's most critical stages has been successfully completed.
LUNA-1's Mission: A Secure and National Data Communication Network in Low Earth Orbit.
ASELSAN LUNA-1 is primarily designed to deliver Internet of Things (IoT) technology through a space-based infrastructure. Its mission is to collect data from strategically important sensors and devices in geographies where terrestrial communication infrastructure is absent or insecure.
LUNA-1 will provide the following technical capabilities:
- Wide Coverage Area: Ability to communicate simultaneously with thousands of sensors over a wide geographic area from low Earth orbit (LEO).
- Low Power Consumption: Efficient communication protocols that enable IoT devices in the field to operate for years with very low energy consumption.
- Low Latency: Leveraging the advantages of the LEO orbit, it offers minimum latency in data transmission, ensuring instantaneous data flow.
Growing Ecosystem: Private Sector's Pioneering Steps are Followed by ASELSAN's Strategic Move
ASELSAN's success is not Türkiye's first step in low-orbit IoT satellite technologies. This is our first private sector initiative in this field. Plan-S‘'of Connecta The series of satellites had previously achieved significant success and begun offering commercial services.
The launch of LUNA-1 adds strategic depth to the growing national space ecosystem, paving the way for pioneering firms like Plan-S, with the participation of a defense industry giant. This demonstrates that Türkiye has established a complementary structure in space, possessing diverse capabilities for both commercial and strategic/military purposes. The agility and commercialization success of the private sector, combined with the engineering strength and strategic focus of an institution like ASELSAN, strengthens Türkiye's hand.
Why is it Critical? Data Independence for Defense and Strategic Infrastructures.
The most fundamental element that distinguishes LUNA-1 from similar commercial satellites is its focus on specific application areas. ASELSAN's primary goal with this project is to provide secure data communication required by Türkiye's critical infrastructure and defense needs.
- Strategic Data Security: For sensitive issues such as border security, military logistics, and energy transmission lines, it is vital that collected data be transmitted entirely through a national network, without relying on foreign infrastructure.
- Operational Continuity: During disasters or crises, it offers an uninterrupted communication channel as an alternative to potentially collapsing landlines.
- Broad Strategic Applications: It provides the large-scale and reliable data flow that the state needs, from agricultural policies to logistics planning, from energy security to environmental monitoring.
A New Milestone in Türkiye's Constellation Goal
LUNA-1 should be seen not as a single satellite, but as the first step in a larger national IoT constellation planned for the future. ASELSAN's entry into this field is a strong declaration of will supporting Türkiye's national goals of establishing and operating its own LEO constellations for both civilian and military needs. This achievement is the joint work of all ASELSAN engineers and stakeholders involved, and further strengthens Türkiye's national presence in space.
