Turkish warships protected by indigenous CBRN system

STM has developed a system used on surface combat platforms that protects ships against CBRN threats.

STM, one of Türkiye's leading defense industry companies, has developed a system used in surface combat platforms that protects ships against chemical, biological, radioactive, and nuclear (CBRN) threats. The system was produced entirely with national resources and has been added to the inventory of the Turkish Navy.

In 2014, STM, in collaboration with MAKEL Teknoloji A.Ş., launched the CBRN Detection and Diagnosis System project. As part of the project, the system, equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, provides early warning of a potential CBRN attack on ships, enabling ship personnel to take necessary defensive measures.

The system was made operational with the contributions of the Turkish Navy and was initially integrated into the MİLGEM Ada Class corvettes. To date, the system is deployed on more than 10 platforms and has achieved export success.

STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz, referring to the importance of the CBRN system, said, “In recent weeks, we announced that we had developed the Helicopter Visual Landing Support Lighting System (HEGİDAS) and Roll Damping System for the first time in Türkiye. Our country's first domestic and national CBRN Testing System has been operating very successfully on various platforms since 2015. Developed in accordance with NATO standards with our subcontractors, this system has an enhanced detection range according to the requirements of our Naval Forces and has internationally recognized certifications. With our domestic CBRN Testing System, which allows for domestic calibration and rapid maintenance, we have ended our dependence on foreign sources in this field and achieved export success. We are proud to have brought a high value-added product to our country.”.

Advanced Protection Against CBRN Threats

Conventional CBRN weapons and toxic industrial hazards, a constantly evolving threat, are among the primary threats to warships. The domestically developed CBRN Detection and Diagnosis System enables the detection of chemical, biological, radioactive, and nuclear threats. The system consists of five different hardware components and unique software: the CBRN Detection and Diagnosis System Main Console, a Biological Agent Detection Device, a Biological Sampling Device, a Radioactive Detection Sensor, and a Semi-Mobile Chemical Warfare Agents and Toxic Industrial Agent Detection and Diagnosis Device.

The system provides rapid and reliable warning of the presence of chemical, biological, and radioactive threats, enabling ship personnel to take necessary defensive measures. Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, the system provides early warning of threats. Operating 24/7 in all challenging environmental conditions, the domestically produced CBRN TT system simultaneously detects various chemical substances, biological entities, and toxic industrial materials. The system, which detects and samples all threats in liquid, solid, or gaseous form, features a wide detection range and continuous data recording capabilities. Threats detected by the CBRN system can be monitored via the system's main console and the ship's Integrated Platform Control and Monitoring System (IPMCS).

What is CBRN?

CBRN is an abbreviation for hazardous and dangerous situations arising from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazardous materials. CBRN encompasses materials that can be used in both warfare and terrorist activities, or that can arise accidentally or as a result of natural disasters. CBRN poses serious risks to both human and environmental health and requires special precautions and interventions. CBRN defense includes activities to protect against and combat such threats.
