Efforts to seek cooperation between Türkiye and Japan in the field of defence industry are continuing. Ichiro Aisawa, Chairman of the Türkiye-Japan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, and his accompanying delegation were received in Ankara by Defence Industry Agency President Professor Dr. Haluk Görgün. During the meeting, cooperation opportunities that could be developed between the two countries, as well as technology and capability-focused joint working topics, were discussed.

New Areas of Cooperation Sought

While no details regarding the content of the meeting were disclosed, it was stated that joint working topics in the defence industry were put on the table. This visit represents a continuation of Türkiye's recent steps towards deepening its defence industry relations with Japan.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, in a statement made in recent months, noted that Türkiye and Japan share the will to act jointly in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles, emphasising that Türkiye's UAV and drone technologies have proven themselves in different operational environments. In the Japanese press, the HÜRJET jet trainer aircraft developed by TUSAŞ was also cited as a potential candidate to succeed the Japan Air Self-Defence Force's ageing T-4 trainer aircraft.

Intense Diplomatic Traffic in the Defence Industry

The Japanese delegation's visit is the latest link in the momentum of Türkiye's defence industry diplomacy. Recently, Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken's visit to Türkiye, the corvette export to Malaysia and the agreements at the NATO Defence Industry Forum have stood out as components of Türkiye's strategy to diversify its defence industry exports.
