TÜBİTAK, which enhances the striking power of the Turkish Armed Forces with its high-tech products, is pioneering a new project that will revolutionize the defense industry. TÜBİTAK will support high-budget projects for the domestic development of a laser weapon, currently only available in the United States.
The US Laser Weapon System (LaWS), which it plans to use to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles and disable ships, has caused a great stir. Similar research and development efforts are underway in Russia, China, Israel, and Germany to improve upon the laser weapon introduced by the US Navy. Turkey has also begun working on this system, considered one of the weapons of the future. Under the leadership of the TÜBİTAK Defense and Security Technologies Research Support Group (SAVTAG), high-budget projects to develop laser weapons will be supported. The institution has issued a call for proposals under the 1007 Program for the development of a High-Powered Laser Weapon System (HPWS).
The project will result in the development of 2 laser weapons.
Within the scope of the call, where the client institution is the Ministry of National Defence R&D and Technology Directorate, universities, private organizations, and public R&D institutions can participate as 'Project Executors'. The 'Project Management Organization' will be responsible for producing 2 high-power laser weapon systems with the required technical specifications that can be used at the end of the project. With the laser system, targets posing a threat on land, sea, and air will be detected, tracked, and neutralized by laser.
The system to be developed within the scope of the project can be used against unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and mortar rounds. The aim is to develop all components of this laser weapon domestically.
