The Turkish defence and energy industry has achieved a game-changing leap in battery cell technologies, a field where external dependency was previously at its highest. ASPİLSAN Enerji, Türkiye’s leading energy technology company, officially launched the rechargeable A35 model at the SAHA EXPO 2026 exhibition in Istanbul, marking a new era in lithium-ion battery technology. Manufactured in the industry-standard 18650 form factor, this next-generation rechargeable cylindrical cell reaches a massive energy capacity of 3500 mAh.
Features of the New Battery: Silicon Anode Technology
In the battery industry, cylindrical cells in the 18650 format, with an 18mm diameter and 65mm length, constitute the most commonly used standard cell type worldwide. Fitting more energy into this limited physical volume is one of the greatest challenges in materials science. To overcome this challenge in the A35 model, ASPİLSAN engineers abandoned the traditional graphite anode structure and transitioned to silicon/graphite composite anode technology. While pure silicon creates an expansion problem during charging, this special composite structure developed by Turkish engineers controls this expansion, providing a much higher energy density.
Challenging Field Conditions and Military Durability
For a developed battery, maintaining durability under extreme weather conditions in the field is as vital as showing high performance in the laboratory. Standard lithium-ion batteries suddenly lose a large portion of their capacity in freezing temperatures due to increased internal resistance.
The ASPİLSAN A35 was specifically designed to eliminate this thermodynamic vulnerability. Thanks to its special chemical formulation, the cell successfully maintains its performance and discharge curve stability even at very low sub-zero temperatures. This critical feature transforms the A35 cell into an indispensable energy source for a wide range of applications, from infantry radios in mountainous terrain to drones exposed to freezing cold at high altitudes and next-generation electric mobility platforms.
Intellectual Property Expanding to Global Markets: Target USA
The primary benefit of indigenising a technology is the absence of external restrictions on its export. Since ASPİLSAN Enerji owns the entire chemical formula and intellectual property of the cell, it can offer this product to global markets directly and freely.
The company fully meets international certification standards with its quality and safety-oriented approach. Accordingly, ASPİLSAN management plans to export the A35 cell to the world’s most competitive and demanding markets, primarily the United States. Aiming to sell battery cells to the USA, the world’s largest technology manufacturer, clearly demonstrates the quality standards achieved by Turkish engineering.
Fully Independent Energy
The A35 cell introduced at SAHA EXPO 2026 officially certifies that Türkiye has moved to a higher league in the field of energy storage. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Turan Özdemir, General Manager of ASPİLSAN Enerji, emphasised that the A35 cell is the most significant indicator of the advanced level the company has reached. Özdemir stated that with this innovative product, they are directly contributing to the country’s technology production capabilities and reinforcing their goal of becoming a strong player in global markets.
In the coming period, the A35 cell is planned to enter the mass production phase and be integrated into battery packs within the defence industry and commercial mobility sectors. Creating such domestic capacity in the energy cell market, which is predominantly dominated by Asia-based manufacturers in the global supply chain, is of strategic importance for security of supply. This step builds a rational, sustainable, and flexible industrial autonomy against potential global logistics crises while minimising external dependency risks for manufacturers in Türkiye during platform development processes.
