A Local Alternative to the Android and iOS Monopoly: Reeder Joins Finnish Partner Jolla

Domestic Mobile Operating System is Coming

Turkish technology manufacturer Reeder has taken a historic step towards becoming a game-changer not only in the hardware world but also in the software world. The company has begun negotiations with Finland-based Jolla Mobile to acquire the “Sailfish OS” operating system infrastructure and establish its own independent mobile ecosystem. If the process is completed, Reeder will be the first Turkish smartphone manufacturer to have its own operating system on a global scale.

When it comes to technology production in Türkiye, the first thing that usually comes to mind is hardware. However, the true power of the digital age lies in the software and operating systems that manage that hardware. Reeder, a technology brand originating from Samsun, announced in a statement to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) that it is preparing to change this equation. The most crucial detail in Reeder's announcement is that the collaboration is not merely a licensing agreement, but a full takeover and development project. The phrase "Reeder/AURA" in the announcement refers to a new structure or sub-brand that will manage the company's software and operating system operations. If an agreement is reached:

What is Sailfish OS? Starting from the top, not from scratch.

Writing an operating system from scratch is a process that takes decades. Reeder's strategy, however, is based on nationalizing a proven, field-tested Linux-based system, rather than reinventing the wheel.

Sailfish OS, developed by Jolla, is not a classic Android fork, but a standalone, open-source, GNU/Linux-based architecture.

  • Technical Architecture: The system runs on the Linux kernel and uses Wayland technology for its visualization. Its interface is built on the "Sailfish UI," written in Qt and QML. This makes the system extremely fluid, lightweight, and controllable via gestures (swipe gestures).
  • Are the Android apps working? The biggest concern for end users is whether they will be able to install WhatsApp and Instagram. The answer is yes. Thanks to its Android AppSupport layer, Sailfish OS can run Android applications (APK) seamlessly. This will prevent users from experiencing application-related problems during the transition period.

Transitioning from Hardware Manufacturing to Platform Ownership

Reeder's move has the potential to be one of the strongest technological responses to criticisms of Türkiye's assembly industry. Today, even giants like Samsung or Xiaomi are forced to operate within the limitations of Android, while having its own operating system (like Huawei's HarmonyOS move) represents strategic sovereignty.

Reeder's emphasis on "high value-added software" and "AI-based security" summarizes the company's goal:

  1. Data Security: The operating system will not be controlled by Google, but by servers and code located in Ankara and Samsun. This could create a critical secure phone alternative, especially for public and defense industry personnel.
  2. Artificial Intelligence Integration: By embedding its own AI algorithms into the operating system kernel, Reeder can offer features not found in its competitors (such as a native voice assistant and an intelligent firewall).

Who uses it today?

Sailfish OS is not a lab project. It has been used for years under license in Sony Xperia series devices (Xperia 10, XA2, etc.) as part of the Sailfish X program. In Europe, privacy-conscious users and some government agencies prefer this system to avoid the data-collecting nature of Android and iOS. Reeder aims to take this ready-made infrastructure and localize it to suit the habits of Turkish users.

From Letter of Intent to Tangible Product

Reeder has currently issued a statement of intent and moved the process to the framework proposal stage. In the coming days, the scope of the code transfer, the licensing model, and when the first “Reeder OS” (or Sailfish-based Reeder) phone will be released will become clearer.

If this project is successfully completed, Turkey will rise to the ranks of countries that not only produce the casing and motherboard of a phone, but also develop and export the software, one of the most critical components for the phone's operation. This will reopen the long-standing debate about "platform" in the mobile sector in Türkiye, and in a much stronger way.
