The Turkish Ministry of National Defence announced that during a firing exercise conducted by the TCG PREVEZE submarine in the Eastern Mediterranean on December 27, 2023, the domestically developed AKYA heavy torpedo hit its target with pinpoint accuracy and destroyed it in a very short time.
With this test firing, a new threshold has been crossed in our defense industry, and our Naval Forces have gained significant strength.
AKYA is Türkiye's first domestically produced torpedo munition, manufactured as part of a project initiated in 2009 with Roketsan as the main contractor. AKYA is a new generation heavy-class torpedo featuring high speed, long range, active/passive sonar head, and internal and external guidance via fiber optic cable. AKYA is used by submarine platforms for the destruction of underwater or surface targets.
Some characteristics of AKYA are as follows:
- It can be used by submarine platforms for the destruction of underwater or surface targets.
- The active/passive sonar head has various guidance modes, including internal and external guidance via fiber optic cable, and wake guidance.
- It has high speed, long range, and countermeasures capability. Its speed is 45+ knots, and its range is 50+ kilometers.
- With its underwater shock-activated, insensitive warhead, it can destroy the target in a very short time. The warhead weighs 350-380 kilograms.
AKYA successfully conducted a test launch in March 2022 using the National Submarine Combat Management System MÜREN. AKYA will also be integrated into the Gür and Reis class submarine platforms in the future.
AKYA has similar, and even superior, characteristics to the German-made DM2A4 and US-made Mk46 torpedoes in the Turkish Navy's inventory. AKYA also helps overcome the difficulties experienced in procuring heavy-class torpedoes from abroad.
